Author: ancestrycom11153 Surnames: Skeels Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.niagara/3154/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am researching the family of a member of the 28th New York Volunteer Infantry, Christopher L Skeels. He was born in Vermont in Jan 1823, was the quartermaster of the regiment during the Civil War, was promoted to Captain in Nov 1862. He died in Oct 1879 in Washington DC. I am trying to find his parents and have made a guess that Christopher H Skeels (born in 1795 in Vermont and settled in Hartland) is his father... I say guess because I've found so many different spellings of his last name that all I have left are guesses. The "guess" is backed up by the Christopher L Skeels GAR Post having been in Hartland, that they both were apparently born in Vermont and that Christopher H Skeels would have been 27/28 in 1823 and was making a family at that time (as they had another son, Ransom, in 1825). However, I am having problems making the final link. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [NYNIAGAR] 1882 Niagara County Death Certificate
    2. JOHN W. TAYLOR
    3. Last Wednesday at the Niagara County Historical Society in Lockport, I picked up an obituary for William J. WALKER who died October 1, 1882 in Lockport. It said he was born in England and had lived in this country for 10 years. He was buried on October 3, 1882 at the Cold Springs Cemetery in Lockport. Now that I am back in Florida, I realize that this person is probably my 3rd great grandfather, William James Walker, 1812-1882. He was married to Jane MACE. They are listed in the 1880 Lockport Census. Two questions: 1. Is it possible to obtain a copy of the death certificate? 2. Could I obtain a photograph of his tombstone? Thank You, John Walker Taylor, Pomona Park, Florida

    1. [NYNIAGAR] 1892 census
    2. Beverly Howard
    3. My great-grandparents lived in LaSalle in Sept 1894 when my great-grandfather , John Bower died. I was looking at the microfilm for the state census of 1892 last night at the local FHC and it took me a while to figure out that it was arranged by "towns" which correspond to what I would call townships. Luckily they had an atlas there that showed me the towns of Niagara Co but it wasnt detailed enough for me to tell if LaSalle would have been in Niagara town or the next one over. The obit says he lived in LaSalle two years, so when the 1892 census was done in Feb 1892, he may not have been there yet. I read through all the entries for Niagara town up to half way through district 5 and the only possible match was a John Bowers, 59, from Germany and a Tailor who was on page 7 of district 1. This may well be him but all other references to him say Bower and there was no family listed with him. At first I thought maybe the census was head of household only but found whole families later on. Does anyone else have experience with this state census? Is it possible that he was listed at his place of business and the family may have been further than I read? Supposedly the whole county was on this film [878329]. Why was there a section for the "Village of N. Tonawanda" when everything else was by town? Are there any indexes for this census? Beverly
