I've "rescued" an old autograph album which originally belonged to "Emma". Clues within the album suggest that Emma is related to the COLONEY, HUNGERFORD, BELL, BROWNE, and BRITT Families. Based on limited research I was able to locate some census information for these families and have included that information as well. The entries in this beautiful old album include the following: "Emma's" Autograph Album Aka "Em" Family: . Etta M. COLONEY, Meridian NY, 10 Apr 1879 "Sister" 1860 census of Cato, NY: Dewitt C. Niagara County is good sized, where exactly will you be wanting to check records out for?? The county court house is in Lockport on Park Avenue.? The best place to stay in Lockport that I know of is the Holiday inn on Transit about 5 minutes from the court house.? The Library is open Monday thru Saturday with?Saturday's until 5 pm but not open on Sunday's; the Court house is only open during the week no weekends or evenings.? We have all kinds of restaurants here, it depends on your palate and whether you want fast food or home cooked food.? We have Applebee's which is the high end of reasonable, we have a Denny's and a Friendly's for quick foods also.? If you want homestyle cooking, we have Jackie's that is open everyday but Monday and closes at 1 on Sunday.? She's not far from the Holiday Inn either.? Then we have your higher priced, better dressing places like Danny Sheehan's or Shamus' both near the courthouse.? The library and the courthouse are on opposite ends of town! really.? Courthouse is on the west side of town and the library is to the east but near downtown such as that is.? One bit of advise, the Lockport library is really not a hotbed of genealogy, better to check with the Historical society which is on Niagara street not far from the Courthouse and open, I believe mostly during the week.??? Hope this helps some.? I will be visiting Niagara County in December for two days to do some genealogy research. Considering the short amount of time I have there, what are the best resources/places to hit and at what times? Library? Courthouse? Should I plan to go during the week or weekend? Also, any recommendations on where to stay? ...and even eat? Rick, I spent a week there in June and found the Courthouse the best source for information. Can't recall the name of the room but it was on the first floor to the right. They had files of surnames (didn't have time to get through all of mine) and would gladly make copies for you. Think it was 25 cents a page. They were very helpful ! I'd recommend being in the area on weekdays as more places would be open. We traveled to the Erie/Niagara Co area last Aug and made a trip to Lockport on the wrong day, so check the schedule for the Historical Society carefully. When I did get there, they didnt have much for me and sent me to the County Historians office where I did find some things. Coming from Texas, I didnt understand the importance of the County and Town Historian positions before visiting. The people at the Niagara city library were helpful and pointed out to me that the Oakwood cemetery where my great-great grandparents are buried was only a few blocks away. Unfortunately, the cemetery didnt have any extra info from what was in the index. I am researching the family name Szaulis. My knowledge is extremely limited. My grandfather Frank (Franciszkai) Szaulis was born in Russo Poland in 1889. His wife Mary (Marya) maiden name Staneluki was also born in Russo Poland in 1889. They were married in Philadelphia. They immigrated to Canada sometime afterward and had one son Alexander John who was born in 1919 Edmonton, Alberta Canada. All died in Alberta, Canada. I found a Stanley and Lottie Szaulis in the 1930's US Federal census. They had three children; Stella (1911), Anna (1914) and Blanche (1918. Lottie Szaulis died in the 1970's in Niagara NY. In the 1920's US Federal census I found Lottie, Stanley, Frank and Mary Szaulis. All were cooks. I do not believe this Frank and Mary Szaulis were my grandparents because of the time line. If anyone has any further knowledge on this name or this family, I would appreciate hearing from you. I have limited funds available to research. Thank you.
