Some of you may recall Sebastian Vonk, the 14-year-old Dutch boy who hasadopted the grave of an American airman, Lawrence F. Shea, a Brooklyn nativewho died in 1945 in Germany at the age of 21. Sebastian is trying to makecontact with Lawrence Shea's surviving family members. (See Sebastian'soriginal post below.) To help Sebastian, I sent for Lawrence's obituaryfrom the Brooklyn Public Library. Here it is: "Lawrence Shea, Casualty In Reich — Corp. Lawrence Shea of 749 President St.was killed in action in Germany on April 2, according to word received byhis family. He was 21. Born in Brooklyn, Corporal Shea attended VisitationSchool and was employed by Oakite Products, Inc., at Bush Terminal, when heentered the army air forces in January, 1942. He was stationed at AvonPark, Fla., until November, 1944, when he was transferred to the infantry,and went overseas last March. While with Oakite, he pitched on the companybaseball team. Surviving are his father, Walter J. Shea; two brothers,Corp. Walter J. Jr., in the air forces in Europe, and James, recentlydischarged from the army for medical reasons, and three sisters, Mrs. MaryLoughlin, Mrs. Joseph Moore and Genevieve Shea." (Brooklyn Eagle, 2 May1945.) With the information about Lawrence's survivors, perhaps someone on thislist can track down one of Lawrence's living relatives.
