    1. [NYNEWYOR] Nicholas HART and the family of William S. HART

    3. Hi New York Listers, Visiting in search of the family of Hollywood legend William S. HART. I've been trying to trackdown his family and so far can only find two years. I know that his father Nicholas HART died in 1895, so nothing on the 1900 Census, but I can't find William, his mother or sisters. William S. HART was born in Newburgh, New York State, in 1864. He was the son of Nicholas HART and Rosanna (Rosamund, Rose) MCCAULEY. Nicholas was English and, according to what I can find out, from Liverpool. Rose was Irish. Seemingly, Nicholas' father was also Irish, according to the 1880 Census. I found the HARTS in Oswego, Illinois, in 1870 - Nicholas (37) a miller, with Rosamund (32), Nettie (9), William (6) and Frances (1). By 1880 the family were in New York City - Nicholas (46), Rosanna (41), Nettie (18), William (16), Frances (11) and Mary E. (8). I have read that the total number of children were 8. There was a Nicholas jnr, but he died young and William S. HART mention a Lotta. I found an autobiography of William S. on Google Book Search but it is only parts of under Limited view. I will buy the book as soon as I can but thought I would try the Lists first. Rose HART seemingly lived into the 20th Century because HART mentions being in a particular play when his mother fell ill. However, I can't find any other Census references to the HART family before 1870 and after 1880. I have access to Hertiage Quest but the search facility is limited and nothignshows up. Rose and Mary E (stands for Ellen) were together while William was touring or in a play somewhere before his big break in movies. Rose should be at least on the 1900 Census and maybe the 1910. And possibly Nicholas could be on the 1860 or even 1850 but I can't find out anything about him. HART mentioned taking his father on a holiday to his home of Liverpool and also said that his grandfather was a John Gleason HART, a lawyer. I haven't been able to prove any of this. He also mentioned that his father was from Oxford, but this doesn't seem to show up either. I'd appreciate any information on the HART family. I've surfed the Net and looked at loads of websites but all give more or less the same limited information. Best wishes, Charles P.S. Not related, just interested.
