Fiona, Interesting twist of events: On his WW1 registration, James McKinney gives the address as 137 W 63rd, same as Mrs. John (Catherine) Cavanagh. I found this in the NYC Directories: New York, City Directories Name:john cavana* Title:NewYork-NY-1925c Year:1925 City:New York Book Section:C Page:306 Source:Polk's Trow's New York Directory 1924-25. n.p. n.p.: n.p., n.d.. CAVANAUGH Caroline (wid John) h. 137 W 63rd James McKinney appears in 1931 at 6 Amsterdam but not Mrs. Cavanaugh (a widow since before 1925) which could mean they lived together then but there was no listing for her alone? Still no luck finding her in 1930 census. Here is a marriage in Manhattan that *may* be her and John. Does the surname JOYCE maybe mean anything to you? Just a stab in the sark. I'm afraid I can't find James or Mrs. Cavanaugh anywhere on the 1930 despite trying all sorts of spelling variations. It's always possible that they just didn't get counted in the census I suppose.
