Bill, It's kinda hard to answer your question but have you looked thru what the LDS/FHC has listed on familysearch.org? They have a number of early NYC records. I checked "Old Merchants of NYC" for your guy and did not find him listed. Do you know where in Scotland he came from and what year he was born? I know that many weavers and shoemakers came from the Glasgow area of Scotland. Have you checked the books, NY Alien Residents by Scott and Conway and also the book Early NY Naturalizations by Kenneth Scott? Most decent libraries would probably have these two books even if you are in Ca. Call around and see. Besides looking thru records, what are you trying to find out about your guy? Have you been able to find him in the early NYC census? If not it could be that he was not head of the household and living with father or brother. Have you check early NYC directories (which you can get some on fiche at your local FHC) to see if he is listed in a time period that you know him to be there? Are there any other Forsyth names listed at the same address as your person? If so, there is a good chance that they are related (as in father or brother). See if you can get someone to check year after year in the directories and see where his name disappears...that might give you an idea of when he left NYC for Ohio.
