    1. [NYNEWYOR] This is ED and AD in New York City

    3. ED is "Enumeration District" and it is a Census Bureau term for a specific geographical area of a county in the Federal Census. It can be a whole county in one place in the country --- and only a few city blocks in another area where the population is much denser. It is a FEDERAL GOVERNMENT term which you will want to record, in addition to the street address and zip code, in order to find your people in federal census records on film and microfiche. It does not necessarily remain the same from one census to another. New map lines are drawn -- based on population -- for each decennial census. AD in New York City means "Assembly District" and it is a term the city uses to designate a specific geographic area from which one Assemblyman is elected to their city government. -- It is therefore a LOCAL GOVERNMENT term and in NYC it is helpful in finding your people on a map that shows Assembly boundaries for the correct era. These boundary lines, too, will shift with changes in population over time. IN NYC the Federal government apparently assisted the local authorities by marking on the Census Sheets the particular Assembly District in which those residents lived. This would help the city to know where the population was shrinking or growing in their city. It would also help the city fathers to draw or redraw their boundary lines for Assembly Districts within the city in order to keep them relatively similar in population so that each Assemblyman would represent a similar number of constituents and each voter's voice would have equal weight in city government. Some cities have Wards that elect a representative to the city council, and you will see the Ward number named on the Census sheet. NYC MAY HAVE BOTH wards and assembly districts, with one being divided into several of the other, I'm simply not certain as it has been a long time since I looked at one of their census sheets. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Thiele Fobian To: nynewyor@rootsweb.com ; MGundac102@aol.com Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2007 11:49 AM Subject: Re: [NYNEWYOR] need help with 1870 census location Peg, I can't answer your question about ED & AD. I wonder whether you've been able to do a wildcard search (for example, searching on LAL* to find all surnames beginning with LAL). If not, what given names do you expect to find in the household in 1870 (or before)? I'd be glad to run a quick wildcard search for you if you don't have access to that search capability. I hope to find a family connection at this address, as this family has been a stumbling block before this date, for many years. Any help would be greatly appreciated & thank you in advance.
