    3. Hi Listers, I hope that I am on the correct List for my enquiry. I am looking for anyone who may help me with the family of Charles John BROWNING, born New York (according to family bible written in Australia) 16th May 1853. I have found in the 1860 US Federal Census an entry for New York Ward 7 District 1, New York, New York. This lists Household Members: Richd BROWNING Age 26 Hanns BROWNING Age 22 Jno BROWNING Age 6 Chas BROWNING Age 4 Willm BROWNING Age 3 Geo BROWNING Age 1 Jno BROWNING Age 38 Emma BROWNING Age 7 Eliza EGERTON Age 19 Joseph MERNICK Age 23 Given that while the family bible gives a birth year of 1853 his marriage certificate gives 1852 and his death certificate gives 1854 then this census date which gives 1856 is not altogether improbable. Does anyone know of this family? We do not know why he came to Australia as he arrived C 1875 it was really after the gold rushes. He tried his hand at many, white collar activities, and is considered by later generations as something of a snake oil salesman. He was my G grandfather. What does the abbreviation "Jno" mean? Is "Hanns" a female name as well as German male name? Cheers Peter Melbourne Australia
