    3. Peter, Is there no death record in 1929 or maybe it doesn't name parents? Burial information? Just wondering if the whole family went to Australia or he went by himself as a young man. In the 1870 census, I thought I saw what looks like this same family here: New York Ward 13 District 12 Browning, D... [?] 45 b. Hanover " Johanna 32 b. NY " D. John 16 b. NY " H. Charles 13 b. NY " W. Frederick 12 b. NY " D. George 11 b. NY " L. Catherine 9 b. NY But in 1880 I think this is the same family in Brooklyn: Name: Aaron Browning Home in 1880: Kings (Brooklyn), New York City-Greater, New York Age: 56 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1824 Birthplace: Germany Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head) Spouse's Name: Johanna Father's birthplace: Ger Mother's birthplace: Ger Occupation: Commission Mealt Johanna Browning 43 John A. Browning 26 Charles H. Browning 24 William F. Browning 22 George A. Browning 20 Jas. Fay 25 Perhaps the initial "H." is Hannes / John (which you give as middle name of your ancestor)? If this IS the same family as in 1870( and 1860), then it is not your Charles if you know that he went to Australia in the 1870s. --Noelle Ohio, USA At 03:54 AM 1/6/2008, Peter Strauss wrote: >Hi Listers, > >I am still beating my head against a brick wall trying to find the origins >of my G grandfather Charles John BROWNING. > >He is noted in a family bible here in Australia as being born in New York >City in 1853. 3. Hi Noelle, Thank you for responding. On his marriage certificate in Sydney in 1884 he states taht he was 32 year old. On his death certificate (Admittedly not completed by him) he is stated to be 75 years of age and in OZZ for 53 years. I don't suppose that he could have been in Brooklyn in 1880. So far as the family know (or admit) he was not part of a family group who came here. In those days most of our migrants came from Britain and Ireland with some from Germany (mine came in 1856). In those years the US was a destination for migrants not a source. Given the jobs I have found him in I, along with other descendents have the feeling that he was a bit of a snake oil salesman. Where Are you in Ohio? I have been to Cleveland a few times on business but did not get far from there in Ohio.
