I wonder if anyone can help me with this? My ancestor James Toft was born at 287 Hudson Street, Manhattan, New York on 6 May 1866. His sister Mary had been born in the US in about 1861, though I don't know where. Their parents both came from the UK to the US sometime after their marriage in 1858. By 1881 the family is back in England, where they stayed. Where might I find details of the birth of James in New York? What sort of district were they born in - well-to-do, or poor? What other evidence might their be of their time in the US? I'm living in the UK and don't have much idea of what this district of New York might have been like. Thanks for any help.
