For WW1 and info for the Civil War. They came here around 1850, and some of the original lived through WW1 times. These are Hessians who were escaping the Duke of Hesse-Darmstardt who dragged men off the street to go to war against their will and that is why many came here; so I would suspect they might want to avoid being involved in the wars. I have been corresponding with a German man about our two families, which may have intermarried.
