If you cannot locate a pre-1916 burial cemetery for a loved one, this is for you. When Gate of Heaven Cemetery opened (1916; Catholic), their grounds usurped the old Fairview Cemetery (non-sectarian). Fairview deaths are definitely in section 36, and perhaps adjacent areas. (MAP: http://gateofheavenny.com/pdf/Gate-of-Heaven-Cemetery-Map.pdf) Gate of Heaven is the only NY Archdiocesan cemetery in Westchester County NY. St. Raymond's is the only NY Archdiocesan cemetery in Bronx County NY. Fairview Cemetery is not listed in Find A Grave's 236 county cemeteries, nor is it listed in Westchester Gen Web. Gate of Heaven is digitizing its burials. Staff and I experimented with death dates to determine if Fairview burials appear in their database yet. We did get hits for as far back as 1910 and I noticed some Jewish names were found that year. This tells me that Gate of Heaven is incorporating its early Fairview Cemetery records into their database. Sharon Gardens,Valhalla NY is in the same area, but didn't begin serving only Jewish residents until 1953. Sharon Gardens is a section of the non-sectarian Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY (non-sectarian, opened 1889). In conclusion, if you have Jewish ancestors who died in Westchester or Bronx counties pre 1953, check Kensico Cemetery first. If your Jewish and non-Catholic ancestors died before 1916, check with with Gate of Heaven and ask them to search Fairview Cemetery records. You just might find that missing ancestor's burial.
