"When all the others were away at Mass" [from Clearances in memoriam M.K.H., 1911-1984] by Seamus Heaney When all the others were away at Mass I was all hers as we peeled potatoes. They broke the silence, let fall one by one Like solder weeping off the soldering iron: Cold comforts set between us, things to share Gleaming in a bucket of clean water. And again let fall. Little pleasant splashes From each other’s work would bring us to our senses. So while the parish priest at her bedside Went hammer and tongs at the prayers for the dying And some were responding and some crying I remembered her head bent towards my head, Her breath in mine, our fluent dipping knives– Never closer the whole rest of our lives. From New Selected Poems 1966-1987 © Estate of Seamus Heaney and reprinted by kind permission of the Heaney family and Faber and Faber Ltd. Seamus Heaney was born on 13 April 1939 in a ‘one-storey, longish, lowish, thatched and whitewashed farmhouse’ in Mossbawn, a forty-acre farm in Co. Derry. He was the eldest of nine children, two girls and seven boys, one of whom, Christopher, died very young in a road accident. Heaney grew up in a culture that was ‘Catholic, folk, rural, Irish’.
Thanks to Mark Lomax in California for thes heads up on TV tonight! We utilize the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) in our research and many have cited incidents of not being able to find family members in these open records. There are two issues here: l) TV tonight &, (2) the future of the SSDI # 1) Tonight on "60 Minutes" 7pm eastern, CBS-TV channel 2 in Metro NYC The show is addressing large numbers of deceased people who are not listed in the SSDI, and large numbers of living Americans who are listed in it. The 60 Minutes website states that "Errors in the government's Death Master File are costing taxpayers billions and creating nightmares for those wrongly declared dead." # 2) Our access to the SSDI is threatened to end. The proposal is that select people will certify to access the SSDI by taking an exam. The excuse given is that these SS #s have been stolen. It's no wonder when too many online sources use ours, including department store charge cards. Dear Friends, I just found out that the National Geographic Station had a special broadcast last night about the famous child diarist, Anne Frank. http://www.historyanswers.co.uk/history-of-war/anne-frank-in-bergen-belsen-we-were-both-skeletons/ Evidently a childhood friend of Anne's tells of their friendship. If anyone knows when it will be replayed, please let me know. Thanks, Barb

Does anyone have a subscription to a historical newspaper site that would have an obit from 1936 Philadelphia? If so, I’d appreciate a look up for Guy Benjamin JOHNSON, date of death Apr. 7, 1936. Enjoy, Barb ====================== Barb, You have been very kind and helpful to me and I'd like to share this notice with you, as you might find it useful. Thru the Irish records, I've found a record showing the birthplace of my great grandfather, as well as a physical description to go with the only surviving picture of him, and numerous other records as well. Happy hunting! Sheila

If ever there's a culture that's face front to politics, it's the Irish. We were born into it. It's no wonder then that Queens County NYC is home to two St. Patty's Day Parades. Sunday, March 1st was the 15th, or 16th, annual "all inclusive" packed-snow trek that included the LGBT community and ran from Sunnyside to Woodside. 'Tis grand in 2015 that one Grand Marshall was a woman, Kerry Kennedy [think RFK...civil rights; ex of NY Gov. Andrew Curmo; Kennedys from Limerick], with the other being actor Brian F. O’Byrne. None, nor 6'5" NYC Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio* aka Warren Wilhelm, Jr, were stars of the day. The "Sunnyside Stars" were NYC Horse drawn carriages! PHOTO> http://www.irishcentral.com/news/irishvoice/NYC-horse-and-carriages-welcomed-at-Queens-St-Patricks-Day-For-All-Parade.html Neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom prevented NYC's oldest inhabitants from trotting on by in spite of de Blasio's cold shoulder to carriage drivers. The de Blasio brouhaha continues: Remove some horses from Manhattan streets [not NYPD's] and un-employ predominantly Irish drivers. Why? To build exclusive condos on the stables' footprints. What's next? Bread pretzels? Just because he's a Massachusetts native is no excuse for de Blasio to eradicate NYC traditions. Reminder: THE ASPCA was founded in New York City in April 1866, prior to laws protecting its children. Why? Horses & commerce, horses and the rich. What's with today's elected politicos polarizing folks? Because they are doesn't mean we have to follow suit like a bunch of lambs. De Blasio marches with gays, but he won't march with Rockaway police and fire officers, our hurricane victims. Why should any elected official's personal agenda override respect for all New Yorkers? Leaders should be neutral and attend all or none. In NYC tradition LaGuardia and FDR sought to unify people and diminish fear. Today's politicos promote stereotyping others and shoving people into labels. Since controversial de Blasio* St. Patty's Parade RSVPs hinge on the disenfranchised. It's time to send HizHonor back to school to freshen up his Irish History e.g. NYC & Irish prejudice at Gucksman Irish House. Saturday, March 7th 1pm Rockaway Parade led by Grand Marshall Stephen J. Cassidy [son of Limerick & Cork], President of Uniformed Firefighters. Starts at Beach 129th St and Newport Ave and ends at St. Camillus parking lot. Reynolds family research> l) When a woman applied for a husband's military pension she submitted documentation of the marriage, e.g. Marriage Certificate, and notarized statements from witnesses to the legal marriage. 2) Usually "New York" refers to New York City, meaning Manhattan pre 1898. 3) NYC Municipal Archives has early [pre 1864] Manhattan records from ledgers [not certificates] that are searchable on microfiche. I used these last week searching for early Irish immigrant deaths and births and was amazed at how many were there. For Manhattan, Births: July1847-1848; July 1853-1909 Deaths: 1795m 1902-1804; 1808; 1818-1948 Marriages: June 1847-1848; July 1853-1937 4) NYC Directories may list BEASLEYs, REYNOLDs, and appropriate churches.
