    1. [NYNEWYOR] HELP with finding Ida Davis Myers/Meyers
    2. CZWhiting via
    3. Hi! Any help would be appreciated! Im looking for the husband of my gg aunt, Ida Davis Myers (noted wrong spelling on the familysearch.org site, the original certificate that I have has MYERS.) Or ANY other information!!! https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W1H-QL1 info in this record: Name Ida Meyers Event Type Death Event Date 06 Aug 1923 Event Place Manhattan, New York, New York, United States Address Martha Washington Hotel Gender Female Age 51 Marital Status Widowed Race White Occupation Housework Birth Date 1872 Birthplace Penn Burial Date 10 Aug 1923 Burial Place West Newton, Penn Cemetery West Newton Cemetery Father's Name Edward Davis <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W1H-QGM> Father's Birthplace Wales Mother's Name Hettie Goodlin <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W1H-QG9> Mother's Birthplace Penn She is buried next to her sister’s family in West Newton Cemetery and for years I have been unable to find anything about where she lived, who she married (someone named Myers!!!), when she moved to NYC, what took her to the Martha Washington Hotel (her “last residence” according to the death cert,) etc. etc. etc. I have searched through many PA records in Westmoreland County where she was born and buried, with no luck on other records. She is a family mystery. Maybe no children? No obit that I can find. No marriage notice or certificate that I can find. I thought maybe someone on this list could enlighten me as to how to find out anything else. Maybe a record approving her body to be shipped to PA for burial? Records from the Martha Washington Hotel? (I know that it is now an updated hip hotel and had passed it many times when in New York before I knew that she had lived there.) Her cert says “widowed” but no name of her deceased husband. Thanks for anything anyone could lead me to in my search!!! Che

    1. [NYNEWYOR] R.I.P. Carmino Ravosa,
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Carmino Ravosa,*** one of the most popular songwriters for children in the nation and its foremost musical composer on historical subjects over the past five decades, died on July 19th in White Plains, NY. He was 85 years of age. Carmino was born in Springfield, MA in 1930. After serving in the United States Army as a corporal in the U.S. Army Band, he graduated from the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT—where he met his wife of almost 60 years, Claire Colby—and received a master’s degree and an advanced degree from Columbia University. He was a music teacher at the Fox Meadow Elementary School in Scarsdale, NY from 1965 through 1978; he was a Faculty Fellow and the Composer-In-Residence at The Dalton School in New York City from 1978 through 1999; and he was the Composer-In-Residence for Edison Schools Inc. (the largest private manager of charter schools in the nation) in New York City from 1999 to 2003. At both The Dalton School and Edison Schools, Carmino was granted broad latitude and flexibility to creatively use the art and love of music to drive knowledge and learning amongst the students. He was remembered decades later by many of the students that he inspired, many of who went on to admirable musical or entertainment careers and stayed in touch with him over the years. Carmino was a substantial contributing composer and editor for Silver Burdett & Ginn’s popular music textbook series, “The Music Connection” and “World of Music”, and the composer of the theme musicals in the two series that were used extensively in children’s classrooms throughout the nation. He was a songwriter for CBS’s “Captain Kangaroo” and “Romper Room”, PBS’s “Shining Time Station” and PBS’s publication, “Sesame Street Magazine”. At the invitation of President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter, Carmino gave a solo command performance of his musical “Ghosts in the White House” in the East Room of the White House in 1978 for over 600 Halloween guests. He also performed selections from his musicals “Shh! We’re Writing the Constitution” and “From George to George” at the 1989 inauguration of President George H. W. Bush. Carmino again performed his musical “From George to George” at the Smithsonian National Museum during the 2001 inauguration of George W. Bush. He was honored as 2009 Alumnus of the Year by the Hartt School of Music, and was honored in 2013 at the Briarcliff Manor-Scarborough Historical Society. Carmino’s musical “Scarecrow” (based upon Nathanial Hawthorne’s work, “Feathertop”) won four major awards in 1975 at the International Light Opera Festival in Waterford, Ireland, and his musical “Seneca Falls” was performed in 1976 at Carnegie Hall in New York City for the Women’s Hall of Fame (where he served on the initiation board). He also performed at the Gala Reopening Celebration for the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York City in 2001 (with Hume Croyn, Art Bushwald and Leslie Uggams). Carmino was a beloved resident of Briarcliff Manor Village, NY, where he served for many years on the Board of Trustees of the Briarcliff Manor-Scarborough Historical Society. He loved the Village and wrote extensively about its rich and significant history. He also performed his musical works at numerous historic landmarks, including the Thomas Paine Museum in New Rochelle, NY (where he served on the board of directors for several years), Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, NY, Washington’s Farewell site at Fraunces Tavern in New York City, Elijah Miller House in White Plains, NY, Washington Irving’s “Sunnyside” home in Irvington, NY, John Adam’s Historic House in Quincy, MA (with Chairperson, David McCullough), the Paul Revere House in Boston, MA, Buchman Tavern in Lexington, MA, and Knapp’s Tavern in Greenwich, CT. He is survived by his loving wife Claire Ravosa, his daughter Carine Ravosa Feist and her husband Arnold, his daughter Gina Ravosa, his son Dean Ravosa and his wife Ann, his eight grandchildren Nathan, Elissa, Michael, Marielle, Erinn, Colby, Parker and Skylar; and his sister Corena Ravosa. Visiting hours will be on Thursday, July 23rd from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Road, Pleasantville, NY. ***A Memorial Service honoring Carmino’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8th at 11am at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 197 Manville Road, Pleasantville, NY.

    3. Dear Friends, This is today's news pertaining to closing Roman Catholic Churches within the Archdiocese of New York. The Archdiocese of NY includes the following counties: New York, Richmond/Staten Island, Bronx, Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan. I've deducted there are two types of closures from CBS News: TYPE 1 Parish closures, or "fade outs": Right column churches will only be used on special occasions, and will MERGE with the left column churches that become the main parishes, marked by an asterisk* https://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/parish_list_2_final_-_one_church_103114_2.pdf TYPE 2 Parish closures: Borth right and left column churches will continue to have masses and sacraments, but MERGE with left column churches that become the main parishes, marked by an asterisk* https://cbsnewyork.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/parish_list_1_final_-_both_churches_103114_2.pdf In the past, Archdiocesan records were moved from one closed church to its sister/surviving parish. But, I've not read anything about transferring records...yet. Genealogists may want to postpone requesting sacramental records until the dust settles. 3. Hi Nicola, I see that his name is spelled Allen on several census. Perhaps that is why the cem. didn't find the record? If they just checked a computer record & typed in the exact spelling than they may have missed it. Try asking for anyone with surname QUIRK from 1938. If they ask for the first name than ask them to check several spellings, Alan, Allen, Allan, etc. I don't see him on www.findagrave.com Regards, Sherri Hi there, I'm writing from Auckland, New Zealand and I have just started doing US research quite recently. Most of my distant relatives are in New Jersey but I also have a few New York connections. I found a death for a distant relative on the familysearch.org website, and I'm hoping someone can help me identify the correct cemetery. I have already tried calling a couple of cemeteries in Farmingdale which I googled, and perhaps I was way off on the wrong track. As per below, the burial place is Pinelawn and the Cemetery is St Charles Cem. I tried calling Pinelawn Cemetery on (631) 249-6691 but they said I had the wrong cemetery and Alan wasn't buried there. I also called St Charles/ Resurrection Cemetery on (631) 249-8700 and had the same result. Name: Alan Quirk Event Type: Death Event Date: 12 Aug 1938 Event Place: Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States Address: 149 - 30 - 114 Place Residence Place: Queens Gender: Male Age: 17 Marital Status: Single Race: White Occupation: Student Birth Date: 28 Jan 1921 Birthplace: U.S. Burial Date: 16 Aug 1938 Burial Place: Pinelawn Cemetery: St. Charles Cem Father's Name: <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WTW-CGC> John Father's Birthplace: U.S. Mother's Name: <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WTW-CGZ> Anna Cunningham Mother's Birthplace: U.S. Reference ID: cn 16123 , GS Film Number: <https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bfilm_numbe r%3A2131755> 2131755 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, Kind regards Nicola Davies Auckland, New Zealand

    3. Hi Laura, 1900 census states that Freida was born 1872 in Germany & arrived in the U.S. in 1872 along with her Mom. The rest of their children were born in NY. 1900 census states that Louisa gave birth to 12 children & six are living. Five of those children are living with the parents in 1900. It looks like Freida's dad consistently used the spelling "Benedick" on census, naturalization, etc. The info from Freida's 1900 marriage cert in NYC is transcribed at www.familysearch.org that she was born in NYC. Either the transcription is incorrect, or that's what Freida told the clerk, or the clerk made a mistake. Always best to look at the original document. About the changes in Freida's age - it's typical to see ages change on various documents, especially for the ladies. My husband's gm only aged 5 years between each Federal census. LOL Regards, Sherri

    3. His death certificate, #16123 Kings County, should have the cemetery in which he was buried. You could order a copy from the New York City Archives or order the LDS microfilm and view it at a local Family History Center(FHC). For addresses of FHCs in New Zealand, go to http://www.gencom.org.nz/LDS_FHCs_in_NZ.pdf. 1. [NYNEWYOR] NYC RESEARCH TRIP
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Dear Friends, I'll be traveling into NYC either this Thursday, or next Monday, depending upon how fast readers respond. This is a four hour round trip so I need multiple orders to schedule it. At the NYC Municipal Archives I'll research Births, Marriages, and Deaths, Marriages Licenses [pre-marriage 1908-1951 only], City Directories, and Manhattan & Brooklyn Birth Index Films...so far! At Surrogate's I'll be searching Wills [yes, my TN friend that includes you]. At New York COUNTY Clerk I'll be checking business start ups. Interested? Please email me personally with a list of what you need. Thanks, Barb
