    1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] Burial - where?
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Excellent point, Heidi. But, then an undertaker should have been listed or a crematorium if no official burial occurred.. Can you imagine St. Vincent [Catholic] Hospital*, a "charity" hospital in Greenwich Village, going against Church law by allowing cremation, in 1910. Time for me to phone other cemeteries.. What would a death certificate state if a body was "donated" to science? I'm unsure if this practice was against the Church, too? Barb [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Not every cremated remains were ever buried. Some remains were "scattered" in a favorite place. Other remains stayed with a surviving spouse or other family member and then buried with them. Many reasons for not finding a cemetery record, aren't there? Heidi

    1. [NYNEWYOR] 1864 NEWS: Tunison, Goodrich, Prendergast, Riley
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. NY TIMES 12 August 1864 "BROOKLYN NEWS" A CHOWDER PARTY ON A SPREE. -- A chowder party, composed of the Emmet Social Club, of New-York, stopped at Tunison's Hotel, on the Coney Island road1, yesterday afternoon, and several of the members being rather elevated, got to quarreling. One of the men drew a pistol, intending to fire upon some person of his own club with which he was quarreling, but instead of hitting him, struck two other men in no way connected with the party. The men injured are WM. H. GOODRICH, connected with the Provost-Marshal's office of the Third Congressional District of Brooklyn, who was shot through the foot, the ball lodging in the ankle. The other man, named JOHN COUGH, is a hostler, employed by TUNISON, who was shot in the thigh. The wound is not serious. Mr. T.B. PRENDERGAST narrowly escaped. The ball which struck GOODRICH went through his fingers and caused a slight flesh wound. The party had been to Sheep's Head Bay, and were quite noisy on the return. The proprietor, Mr. TUNISON, closed his house as soon as he ascertained that the party were in the state they showed themselves to be in. The row occurred on the front porch. The hostler was attending to the horses of a party of gentlemen at the time he was shot. Last evening, as the chowder-party returned, the stages which contained them were stopped by the police of the Forty-first Precinct, and a man named WILLIAM RILEY, who was identified as the one who fired the pistol, was arrested, and locked up to await examination. l) Coney Island Plank Road is now Coney Island Avenue http://catalog.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/articles/10122058.001734/1.jpeg Barb [email protected]

    1. [NYNEWYOR] FIND MY PAST, MOCAVO and NYG&BS
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Find My Past and Mocavo will unite this year and memberships will go to the custodial survivor: FMP. This is timely to members. You can usually negotiate for a few free months added to your membership deadline. If you're new to family research, tighten your seat belts. These mergers of genealogy companies, search engines, programs, and software has become characteristic to genealogy on the internet...at least in the profit-making sector. By the time the general public learns of changes, it's usually too late to stop the rolling stone. Our frustration sets in when the purchaser doesn't understand the product as well as we do. Many Irish searchers were lured into at least a trail membership with Find My Past. It offers records from the United Kingdom, which includes Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England. It's historical Irish newspapers help put flesh on the bones of our Irish born ancestors, yes, Catholics included. Find My Past has an ongoing business relationship with NYC based New York Genealogical & Biographical Society aka NYG&BS (http://newyorkfamilyhistory.org/). Now, Utah born D. Joshua Taylor, MLS, leaves Find My Past to become president of NYG&BS on February 1st, 2016. It appears Josh paved the thoroughfare between both genealogical entities. NYG&BS traversed multiple cosmetic surgeries in the past decade. Once upon a time "the society" with moonlight in their eyes, owned a four-story building at 122 East 58th Street, replete with members-only research facilities, a private library, and bloodlines of urban aristocrats. [For the curious, its former grandeur and political demise, is in the annals of Rootsweb's NYC-L.] The building? Sold. Books? Reside at NYPL. The last many years NYG&BS sells courses, trips, and historical periodicals. Sounds like retail to me. Following the NYG&BS saga has been a real trip. Perhaps a reinvention to "The Housewives of NYG&BS" will succeed? Or, perhaps Josh Taylor will create a persona for NYG&BS that's culturally inclusive? *NYG&BS http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=New_York_Genealogical_and_Biographical_Society Barb Barb [email protected]
