    1. [NYNEWYOR] "Early" NYC Deaths
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. While on Family Search, then browsing NYC's "Transfiguration RC Church," I found this one page of deaths misfiled with their marriage records. I'm saying misfiled as burial locations are included, and most are not Catholic. The first one listed is October 1849 and the last one is July 1853. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-9964-ZH8X?i=25&wc=MNTT-168%3A1041046701%3Fcc%3D2109939&cc=2109939 Barb [email protected]

    1. [NYNEWYOR] Hello, Ancestry
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Have you noticed this erroneous change on Ancestry? You enter a name, then want to specify NY County as the location as either "Manhattan, New York, New York" OR my fave> "New York, New York, New York" The drop down menu no longer accepts these above listings for city, county and state. Instead it appears as > "Manhattan, New York City, *New York City Counties*, New York, USA" which evokes multiple county hits. Most researchers are aware that Manhattan is NY County, not multiple counties within NYC. And, prior to 1898, New York City was essentially the island of Manhattan plus a slight part of what became the Bronx. Some bright fool at Ancestry played with what's not broken again! 1. [NYNEWYOR] OBIT: Shane QUINN
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Shane Quinn of Woodlawn, New York and County Tyrone Ireland passed away on Monday, May 24rd. He was 39 years old. Raised in Drumquin by his parents Eamonn and Patricia Quinn, Shane was one of six children. He attended St. Joseph and St. Mary's Primary Schools and St. Patrick's Secondary School. After school, Shane went to work for the RJ Smith Fabrication Co. for seven years. Wanting to seek out new opportunities; Shane left Ireland and moved to Woodlawn, New York, US in 2000. He would find work in the construction industry and create a life for himself with many friends. Shane was a kind and good-natured man. He cared deeply for his family and friends. One of his favorite pass times was watching soccer, especially his beloved Manchester United. An easygoing man, Shane was by all accounts very handsome. He could be often heard joking, "By God, I'm good looking". And indeed he was, inside and out. Shane is survived by his parents, Eamonn and Patricia and his brothers and sisters: Aaron, Fiona, Brenda and Dermot. He will be missed by his son Ryan. He will be lovingly remembered by his fiancé, Jeanette O'Gorman. Shane is predeceased by his brother Kevin. A celebration of Shane's life will be held at Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Ave, Pelham, NY on Saturday, May 28th from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. TONIGHT watch the remake of the near forty-year-old mini series called "Roots" Part 1 9-11pm Broadcast simultaneously on Lifetime, the History Channel, and A & E In 1976, Alex Haley's NY Times's best seller: "Roots: The Saga of An American Family" inspired the mini-series known as "Roots." After that production aired, and much litigation, including viable charges of plagiarism, and inaccuracies depicted by genealogists, Haley's text was reclassified from non-fiction to historical fiction. 3. Good post, Barb. I have had the occasion to use their genealogy services and they were very good and I got great info, but they do charge. Your death cert will give place of burial. If Woodlawn, go to their site and do a search. I was searching SMITH, so got lots of hits, but then I searched each member of the family and they were all in two graves, so I paid for their research. Mea culpa to Nancy Lutz for my posting about Sean on the Brooklyn list sans her preliminary permission...Since this is a focused genealogy list (as traffic laden as the Brooklyn list is these days...yeah right) I've intentionally kept Sean posts to a minimum, while I've barely been online and under the weather myself. 1. [NYNEWYOR] PA Archivist's Dilemma
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. (Harrisburg) -- Planning is underway to move the state's extensive archives - just days after the state announced its building a new facility in Harrisburg. The state says the $24 million facility will help meet the needs of a digital world. Speaking on WITF's Smart Talk, State Archivist David Carmichael says the process to preserve paper archives is pretty straightforward: control the environment where it's stored. "But when you give me a digital record to preserve, think about putting it on the shelf and coming back in a hundred years. The hardware has changed incredibly, the software to read it has changed. And so we have many different formats of records that we are going to have to preserve for hundreds of years, and that is a great, great challenge." Carmichael says he's also watching long-term costs on the new facility. "We've been hammering the fact that we need to think about long-term costs and make certain we are as cost effective as possible. I'm a taxpayer too, and so I'm always trying to save my own money," he says. It will have state-of-the-art heating and ventilation, but he says after working to put together a new archives building in his previous job in Georgia, he's learned to make sure maintenance costs will be manageable. The building on Harrisburg's 6th Street won't open for years - the earliest date predicted at this point is sometime in late-2019. Barb [email protected]
