McIvor; Lieut.-Cols., James P. McIvor, Michael C. Murphy, John B. Donnelly, Charles Hagan; Majs., George W. Warner, John B. Donnelly, John Connery, Charles Hagan. This was one of the four regiments forming the Corcoran Legion, a brigade composed almost entirely of Irish soldiers. Its companies were recruited principally in New York city and Brooklyn and it was organized at Staten island, where it was mustered into the U. S. service on Oct. 7, 1862, for three years. The regiment left the state on Oct. 16, served for a month in the defenses of Washington, in Casey's division, and then embarked for Fortress Monroe. After a few weeks' service on the Peninsula, during which it participated in the Blackwater expedition and the skirmishes at the Deserted House and Union Mills, it went to Suffolk. Speaking of this splendid fighting regiment, Col. Fox says: "It was actively engaged in the defense of Suffolk, at which time the Legion was commanded by Col. Murphy, of the 69th militia, and the division by Gen. Corcoran-the 1st division, 7th corps. It remained on duty in that vicinity until July, 1863, when the Legion (Gen. Corcoran commanding) was ordered to Washington, where it performed garrison and outpost duty. In May, 1864, it was transferred to the Army of the Potomac and placed in Gibbon's (2nd) division of the 2nd corps, the Legion, under command of Col. Murphy, arriving just in time to take part in the closing battles around Spottsylvania. At the North Anna the 170th encountered a severe musketry fire its casualty list there being the largest of any regiment in that battle: 22 killed, 55 wounded and 22 missing. It met with another heavy loss at Petersburg, June 16-22, where its casualties amounted to 22 killed, 111 wounded and 3 missing. Most of this loss occurred in the assault of June 16. The regiment was again hotly engaged at Reams' station, where Maj. Donnelly was killed. From June 1864, until the close of the war, the Legion, together with the 8th N. Y. heavy artillery, formed the 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 2nd corps." The casualties of the regiment at Reams' station amounted to 85 killed, wounded and missing. It met with further losses at Boydton plank road in October, at the Petersburg works in March 1865, and then took part with the 2nd corps in the final Appomattox campaign which ended with Lee's surrender. A list of the important battles in which the 170th was engaged includes the siege of Suffolk, Carrsville, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Weldon railroad, Deep Bottom, Reams' station, Boydton plank road, Hatcher's run, Deserted House, Edenton road, Totopotomy, Strawberry Plains, Vaughn road, Farmville and Appomattox. Col. McDermott resigned shortly after the regiment took the field and his successor, Col. McIvor, commanded it during most of its active service. He was a gallant officer and rose to the rank of brevet major-general in 1865. The regiment was warmly commended by its brigade and division commanders for its conduct in battle and its efficiency. Its total enrollment was 1,002, of whom 10 officers and 119 men-or 12.8 per cent.-were killed and mortally wounded; 2 officers and 96 men, died of disease and other causes; total deaths, 227. The total number killed and wounded was 481. Source: The Union Army, Vol. 2, p. 170 New York ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTIETH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY. I never thought of looking in this paper because I have never heard of it before! I am very excited because it gave me the name of the Rev. and that led me to their religious sect. Thanks for the tip...this is why I love these message boards. Joan

    1. [NYNEWYOR] St John's Lutheran aka New Utrecht Cemetery CLEAN UP Oct 9th
    2. Not too long ago I was asked where St John's Lutheran Cemetery was located. I'm passing the info to several lists as CLEAN UP is Oct 9th is anyone can volunteer!! (Burials transcriptions) _http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Cemetery/StJohnLutheran.html_ (http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Cemetery/StJohnLutheran.html) Last week Jackie was kind enough to add to Nancy Geiss' info: here's the answer: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- Thanks so much for your interest in the New Utrecht Cemetery (aka St. John’s Lutheran). As promised, I brought up your interest in the cemetery’s records at last night’s Friends of Historic New Utrecht’s monthly meeting. If anyone would like to request a look up they are welcome to direct their inquiries to the group in any of the following ways: Through the website: http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/ Via ‘snail mail’: The Friends of Historic New Utrecht 1831 84th Street Brooklyn, NY 11214 Or by phone: 718-256-7173 All enquiries will be responded to as quickly as possible but we are a volunteer group and as I know you’re well acquainted with, time is always a premium. =) Please be sure to let everyone know that the posted list that was compiled by Mrs. Frost is incorrectly labeled as ‘St. John’s Lutheran’ and that it in fact refers to New Utrecht Cemetery. Interestingly enough, it seems that this misnomer was carried over to general use as I believe at least one of the Death Certificates that my mother sent away for had interment listed as ‘St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery’ although they are at New Utrecht. We are in the process of preparing our records with the goal of making them available online but we are not quite there yet. A little background on the structure for the care/maintenance of the cemetery… it was set up to be cared for by the families of those who are buried there. Unfortunately there aren’t too many of them anymore (my mother and I have relatives there which is how we came to be acquainted with and ultimately became members of Friends) and so care has fallen to volunteers. The cemetery is fenced in and kept locked when no one is present – there was an incident with vandalism a few years ago where kids came in, damaged and knocked over a bunch of stones and generally wrought havoc. Also, if you would be so kind as to let the list know that we currently have a cemetery clean up (weather permitting) scheduled for Monday, October 9th beginning at 10AM. This is the observed Columbus Day holiday. Unfortunately, I am not lucky enough to have the day off and will have to miss it… Usually we are there for a few hours and how much we accomplish is dependent on how many bodies show up. We currently have a couple of working lawn mowers and a weed whacker along with a few manual tools. Due to our limited pool of available folk, the cemetery has gotten away from us a bit with some very heavy overgrowth of weeds concentrated in the center in the midst of many stones (and what we think may be poison sumac and/or poison ivy in one spot). We have been able to maintain about ¾ of the property, particularly around the perimeter but the one section in the middle has become a challenge for us and we are researching ways to effectively and appropriately deal with it. With that in mind (haha and hopefully it doesn’t scare people off – there’s plenty of non-jungle ground - I just felt I should mention it), if anyone would be interested in coming to lend a hand we would be thrilled to have them. They would need to bring some hand tools as we may not have enough for everyone to use and gloves. Please dress with long pants and the usual precautions for being out in tall grasses, etc. This would also be a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has relatives buried here or thinks that they might. Please ask anyone who would like to participate to contact Friends at the above # to let us know so we have an idea how many people we can expect. The cemetery is located at 16th Avenue between 85th and 84th Streets with the entrance part way down on 85th Street. Thank you in advance for sharing this with the list and thank you for ALL that you do maintaining the list and coordinating the volunteers who add their research to the Brooklyn pages!!! =) Regards, Jackie ___________________________________________________ Thanks To Nancy G. and Jackie!!
