I looked at a census for 1910 in Brooklyn and there were three pages of people. I did find this site: http://www.thetroubleshooters.com/80th/318thaco0001.html Maybe the guys who did this site would know where to direct her? hope this helps, and what a nice thing for her to do. :) peace Kate NancyL916@aol.com wrote: I received the following letter and I'm appealing to the area lists for their help .. ____________________ My name is Sebastiaan Vonk. she died in 1942. U can get the death record thru the mormon church for two dollars. Bob Lavelle Clara 73 y Feb 1 1942 2668 Manhattan 1868 - 1869
when was she born ?? Hi all- I'm trying to find Clara Lavelle in 1910. I believe she is in New York at that time, because once she arrived from Sweden, in about 1882-4, I find her only on NY census records. She may be listed as an actress, and I believe she would be in Manhattan, perhaps East 31st Street. any help is greatly appreciated Kate
There is a very brave man buried in New York County: Francis Iselin Tomes, VMI Class of 1867, Trinity Cemetery, plot 791 westerly. We need a photo of the grave. The VMI Corps of Cadets fought as a unit at the Battle of New Market, Virginia, on May 15, 1864. Two hundred fifty seven cadets were on the field. Ten cadets were killed in battle or died later from the effects of their wounds; 45 were wounded. The youngest participating cadet was fifteen; the oldest twenty-five. Two VMI alumni are attempting to obtain photos of the graves and biographical of all 257 cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market in the Civil War. This is a HUGE task. RAoGK has offered to help with the database. You can visit their web page at http://www.augustagavmiaa.info/new_market_database.htm Read about the battle at http://www.vmi.edu/archives/Civil_War/cwnm.html. Hopefully someone on this list has the time to locate and photograph the grave. We welcome any additional biographical information not in the VMI archives or "The Corps Forward" by Couper and Gibson. If in doubt, send what you have and we will compare it. ;-) Please send to me, sarahreveley@grandecom.net . I will then combine all the data on him and send it to them. They contacted me about my ancestor George Francis Reveley, who was a cadet then, and I volunteered to help them get the other graves photographed, knowing we have so many wonderful people on Rootsweb that will help. ;-) Thanks, Sarah Reveley San Antonio, Texas sarahreveley@grandecom.net

Now almost forgotten, Evacuation Day was celebrated as a holiday long before the Fourth of July: On November 25, 1783, the British Army boarded their naval vessels and evacuated New York City (then only coterminous with New York County), their wartime headquarters and their last military position in the United States during the Revolutionary War. As the British sailed away south in retreat through the Narrows separating Staten Island on the west and Long Island on the east, the last thing they saw, as their ships sunk below the horizon, was the Flag of the United States of America flying atop the Liberty Pole (an extended flag pole) in the frontyard of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Hamlet of New Utrecht, Town of New Utrecht, in the south-central part of Kings County. Today this location is at Christopher Columbus Boulevard (18th Avenue) and Liberty Pole Boulevard (84th Street) in the Bensonhurst neighborhood in the south-central part of the New York City Borough of Brooklyn. (The NYC Borough of Brooklyn is coterminous with the NYS Kings County). Replaced six times over the years, the 106' Liberty Pole is the last remaining Liberty Pole in the original thirteen United States. On top of the Pole is the original eagle and weathervane. The eagle is made of wood and has a 5' wingspan. After two hundred and twenty-two years, the weather has weakened it considerably and it has been reinforced with iron bands. The eagle has looked over the bay and seen many sailing vessels, steamships and war ships. It has been said that the eyes of this golden eagle has looked upon more change in the world’s history than occurred from the days of Nebuchadnezzar to the day when the eagle was raised. Here's the URL for the New Utrecht Liberty Pole Association: http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/LPA.html Here's the URL for the Dutch Reformed Church: http://www.newutrechtchurch.org/ I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. I found an announcement for my ancestors marriage record (in 1819) on Genealogybank.com. It gave the name of the minister as Rev. Edward Mitchell. After investigating him I found out that he was a minister for the Universalist church. The article said "the new church corner of Duane and Angustus streets built by the "Society of United Christian Friends" generally called Universalists..." Does anyone out there know if there are available records or an archive for Universalist records (NYC) or know about this church? Thanks, Joan

You've probably all heard by now that one of the commercial websites has put up all the New York arrivals from 1820 to 1957. That includes the pre Castle Garden years, the Castle Garden years, and the Ellis Island years. Steve Morse has already jumped in and created an improved form for it. That form is in both the Ellis Island section and the Castle Garden section of his One-Step website at http://stevemorse.org As with all his other one-step forms, it allows you to search on fields that you couldn't search on by going to the commercial website directly. Some examples are searching on final destination in the US, name of the person meeting the passenger, exact date of arrival, etc. If you have any questions or comments, please address them to Steve Morse directly. His email address is at the to of his website. Diane Jacobs Somerset, NJ
I've "rescued" a group of photographs belonging to the KING Family of New York State. The photographs included are: * Hawley KING, taken at the W. G. Smith Studio in Cooperstown, NY, 1870's, man in his 50's or 60's, note "Father of Ophelia KING DIX" * Ophelia KING DIX, taken at the O. Monroe Studio in Dunkirk, NY, 1860's, young woman in her teens or 20's, note "Mother of W.S.D" * Ophelia KING DIX, taken at the H. S. Studio in New York City, 1870's, man in his 20's or 30's, note "son of Uncle Levi KING" Based on limited research I was able to find the following information regarding this family in the census records: 1860 census of Otsego, NY: Hawley KING, age 50, a Farmer, born NY Alathea KING, age 42, born NY 1870 census of Milford, NY: Althea KING, age 52, Keeping House, born NY 1880 census of Morristown, NJ: Ophelia K. DIX, a widow, age 35, born NY, a Teacher, parents born NY Walter S. DIX, son, age 13, born NY, in School, parents born NY Other photographs recovered from the same source come from the BERRY, SOUTHWORTH, BOSS, and CONNER Families. Not sure how they are all connected, however, the handwritten notations on all are made by the same hand. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old group of family photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this KING Family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Jim, It was nice meeting you at the NYPL workshop this week. I used to be a regular at the library and the archives (Municipal and National), they thought I was a professional researcher. Seems I haven't had the time of late to do more research after my initial go round. Hope to talk to you in the near future at a Roundtable event. Regards, Kevin
