    1. [NYNEWYOR] Lawrence F. Shea
    2. Mark Lomax
    3. Some of you may recall Sebastiaan Vonk, the 14-year-old Dutch boy who has adopted the grave of an American airman, Lawrence F. Shea, a Brooklyn native who died in 1945 in Germany, at the age of 21. Sebastian was trying to make contact with Lawrence Shea's surviving family members. (See this web site for Sebastiaan's story: http://www.thetroubleshooters.com/80th/shea001.html.) To help Sebastian, I sent for Lawrence's obituary from the Brooklyn Public Library. With Lawrence's obit, I was able to track down one of Lawrence's nephews, a son of Lawrence's brother Walter. I contacted the nephew, who lives in Pennsylvania. When I told the nephew Sebastiaan's story, his response was odd -- something less than enthusiastic. Nonetheless, I sent Sebastiaan the nephew's e-mail address. Sebastiaan would like a photo of Lawrence Shea. I hope Lawrence Shea's nephew will accommodate Sebastiaan. I think Sebastiaan deserves praise for his kindness in adopting Lawrence Shea's grave. 2. Mary Thiele Fobian
    3. Jim, the question about sources was from me, Mary. (Jim's signature appears automatically, as list administrator; it can be a little confusing.) Is your objective simply to identify the addresses of these businesses? In an index extract from an 1896 NY Times is the phrase "... York agents are Busk Jevons of 201 Product ..." In a 1915 NYC directory I find: Lamport & Holt Line 301 Produce Ex I don't know what "Ex" means in the address. Perhaps "Exchange." There is quite a bit of information in the various newspaper collections available through subscription. 1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] [BKLYN] FRIEDMAN MURRAY: Brooklyn-France
    2. PS...I think the next logical step would be to obtain the birth certificate. Since you have the number, you can order it directly from the FHL in Salt Lake City..it would cost $4.00, unless someone on the list has access to the film and could get a copy of it and scan it in and email it to Ilan. 2. I have checked on Ancestry and there are several Murray FRIEDMAN but none that I believe to be the right one. One possibility is that the family emigrated to Europe before the 1900 census. I had this happen in my family.. Fran

    1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] [BKLYN] FRIEDMAN MURRAY: Brooklyn-France
    2. Happy New Year I'm sending this also to the lists in hopes that someone will come through with some look-ups. "Friedman Murray born 23 November 1898, Brooklyn. Certificate no. 18303" This does indeed sound like your Friedman. Our records are NOT always accurate, especially when done as a transcript. Handwriting, accents, educational skills play a large part. If you have a FHC(Family History Center near you or you can do it on line, you can send for the cert. They are very inexpensive. Then go for the Census after you have the place of birth. There were 2 census done back then. A federal, every 10 years and a state on the 5 year up until and including 1925. 1900 Federal 1905 State 1910 Federal 1915 State 1920 Federal 1925 State 1930 Federal (which is the last year available at this time, as we require a 70 year span before releasing these records to the general public.) A little help here Brooklynites & New Yorkers, for a a man whose father and friends helped keep us free!! Could someone with access to Ancestry Census try to look up this family from Ancestry? Viva La France! Nancy

    2. Doc
    3. Hi Shelly, How nice of you to post of this picture......I am not related, just found it interesting and thought I could be of some help in locating the family. I thought of Surname Boards on Ancestry and GenForum, however there are none for Donnatin, there is a Donnato, Donnellon . I looked in the 1870 census and Franks parents are Frank and Regina Donnatin. Frank Sr. b. France, abt 1830, Regina, b. Wurttemberg, abt. 1832. Frank Jr., b. abt. 1853, NY, has 5 siblings, Annie, 15, Fred, 10, Kate, 8, Rose, 6, and Louis, 4. New York Ward 20 District 11 (2nd Enum), New York, New York, Post Office at 100 St 9 and 10 Ave. I was unable to locate Frank Sr. Regina or Frank Jr. in 1860 and I used first name only, where born and year. I found that Regina's maiden name is Haug. Which there are a Haug and Huage Surname Boards. I also found the one sibling Louis N. Donnatin, married Sarah A. McAllister, 4 Sep 1895, Manhattan, New York, New York. Her parents are John McAllister and Margans McKem. I hope this helps some....I am sure there are still Donnatin families living in NY. -- Regards, D.R. 2. Mark Lomax
    3. Some of you may recall Sebastian Vonk, the 14-year-old Dutch boy who hasadopted the grave of an American airman, Lawrence F. Shea, a Brooklyn nativewho died in 1945 in Germany at the age of 21. Sebastian is trying to makecontact with Lawrence Shea's surviving family members. (See Sebastian'soriginal post below.) To help Sebastian, I sent for Lawrence's obituaryfrom the Brooklyn Public Library. Here it is: "Lawrence Shea, Casualty In Reich — Corp. Lawrence Shea of 749 President St.was killed in action in Germany on April 2, according to word received byhis family. He was 21. Born in Brooklyn, Corporal Shea attended VisitationSchool and was employed by Oakite Products, Inc., at Bush Terminal, when heentered the army air forces in January, 1942. He was stationed at AvonPark, Fla., until November, 1944, when he was transferred to the infantry, and went overseas last March. While with Oakite, he pitched on the companybaseball team. Surviving are his father, Walter J. Shea; two brothers,Corp. Walter J. Jr., in the air forces in Europe, and James, recentlydischarged from the army for medical reasons, and three sisters, Mrs. MaryLoughlin, Mrs. Joseph Moore and Genevieve Shea." (Brooklyn Eagle, 2 May1945.) With the information about Lawrence's survivors, perhaps someone on thislist can track down one of Lawrence's living relatives. 1. [NYNEWYOR] Concerning "A Visit From St. Nicholas"
    2. For those whose ancestors were in New York City and environs in 1822, especially for those in the Chelsea area, there is a special connection between that place and the celebration of Christmas, as currently practiced: "A Visit From St. Nicholas" was written in 1822 by Clement Clarke Moore, a scholar in Hebrew and the son of an Episcopal bishop. Moore's family had come to America in 1750 from Chelsea, England, and established a farm named Chelsea in the area of Manhattan still known by that name. Following my December 1999 posting of the above, Beth A. Scott (bethscot@mindspring.com) added: "Any of you who live in and around NYC may be interested to know about an annual event at the Chapel of the Intercession each year on the Sunday before Christmas. There is a reading of "The Night Before Christmas" in the Church, and all the children are invited to come and sit in front. Often there are famous guest readers, and it is a wonderful event for small children, especially. The service is followed by a lantern-light procession down the hill and into the cemetery where Moore's grave is blessed, and there is a tent set up with hot chocolate and cookies for all. Father Christmas (not Santa) always makes an appearance." "The Chapel of the Intercession is part of Trinity Parish, and is located at Broadway and West 155th Street. Even though my daughter is all grown up, I still try not to miss it." Then, Steve K (Odaddyo@aol.com) added as well: "In Clark Clement Moore Park on the corners of 10th Avenue and 22nd sts a block or so from the actual place the poem was written, there is annual reading of the poem every Christmas. I am not sure--but I think it might be this weekend." For more about Clement Clarke Moore and "A Visit From St. Nicholas", please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clement_Clarke_Moore http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/historical/a/clement_c_moore.htm By the way, Benjamin Moore is the g-grandson of Clement Clark Moore. I wonder if this means that if you read "A Visit From St. Nicholas" you should be doing this in a room that was painted with Benjamin Moore paint?
