Hi Bill Can you narrow down a census year to begin with, where was Albert born, do you know if immigrated, when? Establishing a time line when and where this family-ies were is helpful. As you have it, you are leaving it up to a volunteer to do the math, figure out when everyone was born, where they lived when. Who is Charles Belka in relation to Albert Belka? Hi Bill- I found Ottillie on the 1920 in Brooklyn, on Fifth Avenue, she is a Private nurse, aged 48, it says she is widowed, but that is sometimes what they said instead of Divorced. I see Edgart, age 19, William age 17, Alfred, age 15 and Fredik(Frederick?) age 11. The older boys had jobs, Frederick was in school. Her sons were all born in Vermont. I found Fredericka in 1910 working as a servant in 1910 in Brooklyn on 15th Street. In 1910, I also find Albert W and Otillie in Brooklyn, with 6 children, this is her second marriage. I am presuming that the 2nd enumeration refers to a second counting of the same county, done at a slightly later date in time. The 1890 Police Census was, as far as I understand, taken by police officers going door to door, rather than census enumerators, and has survived although it is not indexed. It seems to me that both probably resulted from NYC, or perhaps certain areas within NYC, having felt they were undercounted. I am sure the actual politics of the thing would be fascinating, but I don't know what they are. I also do not know if this was done in 1880 I have found one of my families on the first enumeration in 1870, but not the second. How did you search the second? Was it indexed with the first? Ancestry, Heritage quest or microfilm? I am no expert and if anyone knows what I've said to be incorrect I would appreciate them replying to the list so all of us can benefit! They ran two census' (enumerations) in NYC in 1870. The were several months apart and may show different addresses and ages and number of household members and still be correct! I found this explanation: THE 1870 FEDERAL CENSUS FOR NEW YORK CITY. by Charles Sullivan, 13 July 2001 Note: In 1870, New York City consisted ONLY of New York County, comprised of Manhattan Island and several smaller islands in the East River and NY Harbor, i.e., Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island), Governor's Island, Ellis Island, Bedloe's Island (now Liberty Island), and Ward's Island. In 1870 (as in recent years), the large cities complained they were undercounted in the census. The hue and cry became great enough that the Census Bureau caved in and undertook a recount for some cities, NY City included. This recount is known as the 1870 2nd Enumeration. (The recount was NOT conducted in the other four counties which today are included in NY City, i.e., Kings, Queens, Richmond, and Bronx.) The original census (or 1st Enumeration) was conducted beginning 1 June 1870. The 2nd Enumeration was conducted about 6 months later, in the December-January time frame. Note: The Election Districts were redistricted following the 1st Enumeration so will usually be different for the 2nd Enumeration although the Wards will be the same. However street addresses were recorded for the first time in the 2nd Enumeration, so given an address, it's usually not too difficult to scroll down the microfilm for the Ward and zero in on the right page.
