Are guardianship and circuit court records available for review at the NY Municipal Archives? If so, on what floor of the building would these be found and are they open to researchers? Thank you.

Hi all! I have a very big favor to ask of someone who may be going to be looking up death certificates soon! If they would look up a James Ferry, age 53, DOD 21 June 1893, NYC, Certificate number 40290, and let me know if he was married to a Mary Ellen Ferry? I would greatly appreciate it & I am willing to pay for it! Thank you in advance Mary in VA
In the 1870 NYC census, it lists James (33), Julia (26), Julia (2), William (10), and Katie (5). In 1880 NYC census, it lists James (42), Julia (37), William (19), Julia (11), Catherine (9), Grace (6), Flora (2). (James Walker Hay was born in Scotland.). The only birth certificate I never got was of their child William, born in 1861. On the birth records of the other children it says the mother, Julia, was born in NYC, Some say her maiden name was Holmes, others that it was O'Connel, on her death record, it says she was born in NJ. Baptismal records from the Catholic church have the following godparents: Charles E. Homes, Mary A. Quinlan, John Hay, Julia Lanning, Albert O'Connell, Rose O'Connell, William H. Hay, Margaret Auger. According to church records, there are no witnesses (so said the person that sent the information) for the marriage of James and Julia in 1870. After reading the above, I guess what I need is to get the birth certificate of WILLIAM (O'CONNELL or HAY) born in 1861 in NYC. Maybe that would have a clue as to exactly who my Julia was. I certainly would appreciate it if SKS would be able to find that birth certificate for me, and tell me what it says. LOL Thank you, Heidi

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at http://www.aol.com.

I was asked by my department head, who I will add did nothing that I am aware of to change the policy thereby to keep me, if I would work part time. I told him I'll not be a servant to anyone. Hi, listers I sure wish someone could find my JULIA A. HOLMES O'CONNELL HAY. She was born sometime between 1840-1844 and probably in NYC. Her last marriage was to James Walker Hay (in the catholic church) in 1870 but she had children before that - so they were only baptized in the catholic church when she knew she was dying. I did find her marriage record from the catholic church, but she got married before that (I'd guess, and somewhere) 1870, and I'm down to trying to find out just exactly who SHE is and when was she born. Hi Jane, For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library 89 East Main Street Oyster Bay 11771 Tel: 516/922-1212 Fax: 516/922-6453 eMail: ??????? http://www.nassaulibrary.org/oysterbay/Newsite/index.html It is important to know that there are 3 "Oyster Bays" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage): 1. There is the Hamlet of Oyster Bay (763 acres); 2. There is the Oyster Bay, NY 11771 postal zone (7,002 acres), and it includes the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and parts of other surrounding villages and hamlets within its service area; and, 3. There is the Town of Oyster Bay (70,908 acres), and it includes 18 villages and 18 hamlets as well as the Oyster Bay, NY 11771 postal zone and other postal zones, within its borders. The pertinent current geography: Oyster Bay is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north most part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County. There are 18 villages (municipal corporations) and 18 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Oyster Bay. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Oyster Bay Harbor; on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove; on the south by the Hamlet of East Norwich; and, on the west by the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Oyster Bay has a different border than does the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an Oyster Bay mailing address and not be in Oyster Bay). .............................................acres .....Hamlet of Oyster Bay............763 .....Oyster Bay, NY 11771........7,002 .....Town of Oyster Bay..........70,908 Thus, you can readily see that 9 of every 10 places with an "Oyster Bay" mailing address are NOT in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay. [These places may be in the Village of Centre Island (incorporated in 1926), the Village of Cove Neck (incorporated in 1927), the Village of Oyster Bay Cove (incorporated in 1931), the Village of Laurel Hollow (incorporated in 1926), the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Muttontown (incorporated in 1931), the Village of Upper Brookville (incorporated in 1932) and the Village of Mill Neck (incorporated in 1924).] For those who have their copy of the 2005 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County on pages 5 & 11 (map) and 12 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located. ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. What relevance does this have: Keep in mind that all too often the person they listed as "going to" may not have been known to them personally. Very often someone in their home time had a relative in the new country and everyone and anyone could use the name and address. I have also read that for a period of time single women had to be met at Ellis Island by a man or a family member or they were not permitted on shore. Elizabeth V. Annie Bacon is in the 1910 census at the address contained in ur posting. If you want the specifics e mail me direct and I will send you the particulars and the census image. Bob I have another request. My grandmother (Anna Murtagh) arrived in 1904 from Ireland and put 173 East 103rd St, where her sister Mary Murtagh was living, as her destination. She was traveling with Bridget Duff who put the same address but said she was going to her cousin Mrs Ann Bacon. I know Annie and Mary Murtagh moved away, and I assume Bridget Duff did because she was young when she arrived, so I'm hoping I can find this Mrs Ann Bacon in a census somewhere to find out more info about her. Maybe her maiden name? Also maybe someone knows the name of the closest Catholic Church to that 173 East 103rd address. If none of the names can be found in a census, etc maybe I'll find something at the church. ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone.
