    1. [NYNEWYOR] A publication at the NY library at 5th Ave and 42nd St
    2. ColumbusGuy
    3. Hi, I'm new to the list. I live in Columbus, Ohio and am researching relatives in various parts of the US. Currently I'm looking for a book entitled "Through the years at the Eastern High School", published 1944.. This book contains a list of graduates from Eastern High School in Baltimore, MD, from the years 1844-1944. I see in WorldCat that the only public library that has a copy is the New York Public Library, in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. I was wondering if anyone ever makes it to this library and if you'd be willing to look for a relatives name listed among the graduates? She was born in April 1888, so she probably would have graduated somewhere around 1905-1907. She may be listed under two different surnames, as her mother remarried and moved to Baltimore when she was young. She was born Mary Barbara Kaffenberger (which is sometimes mispelled as Kauffenberger, Koffenberger or even Coffenberger). However, she may be listed as Mary Barbara Thomas. If she is listed, I would be interested in a copy of her information. Thanks you for any help you may be able to offer. Sincerely, Rich Kaffenberger Columbus, OH --------------------------------- Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? Check outnew cars at Yahoo! Autos.

    1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] NYC WARDS 1840
    2. It might be easier to post the name of the peson who lived at the addresses and then look them up in the 1840 census and get the ward number that way. Hi, Wondering if anyone can tell me the Ward #'s for the following addresses in 1840: 547 Fourth, 42 Forsyth. Also, the distance in city blocks (or miles) between the two. TIA for your help. 1. [NYNEWYOR] 1875 NYS Cenus, Troy NY, update
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I have started getting the 5th ward of this census online. I hope to have it completely online by tomorrow, so keep checking back. There are 14 files to format and upload and I will do about four at a time. Many thanks to the following people who helped transcribe this ward: Marie McConky, Mary Hoar, Lynn Grice, Sharon King, Bob McConihe, Gary Craver, John Murnane, Pam Trudeau, Marialice Mangan, and Sharon Minkel. Without them, getting this ward online would not be possible. This ward was much easier to read than the 4th ward and I have more confidence in it's accuracy. However, we transcribed the names as spelled by the enumerator and at times he spelled the surnames and/or first names wrong. Also, there are ink blurs at the bottom of many of the pages that made it near impossible to read the entries, so that is the main reason for the ??. You can find the Fifth Ward by going to the URL under my name. On my homepage, under New York State, click on Troy. If you would like to help with the transcription of the last half of the census, contact me off line. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

Does anyone have a contact within the recently closed NYC Fire Patrol who would be willing and able to assist me in obtaining information on my gf's career with them? I have contracted a Fire Patrol headquarters many times over the last 4 years, a Fire Patrol member from their web site, a Fire Patrol member referred to me through the Brooklyn list, posted here a few times, as well as the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation and to date I am still in the batters box. Back a few months ago records were being destroyed so it may be too late but there is always hope that someone is willing to assist me. Contact me off list if you are able to assist me. It is an excellent example of the types of genealogical records preserved at *GenealogyBank * that you can use to fill in the details of your family tree. A typical entry gives the passenger's name, age, where they were coming from, and their destination, the name of the ship, ship's captain and the port. Some entries also include additional notes. This published passenger list gives the names of all passengers arriving in the US between October 1819 and September 1820. It includes not only immigrants coming to the U.S. but also a large number of U.S. citizens who were traveling by ship from one part of the country to another. For example Alfred Spooner, age 32, a farmer from Vermont and D. McCall, age 33, a merchant from North Carolina were both listed as traveling on the *Brig Forest* that was going to Mississippi. Entries also tell of births and deaths at sea. Eugenia Virginia Stark and Charles Julius Wittell were two German children born at sea. Christiana Yauch was not so lucky. She is recorded as having died at sea while coming to America from Germany. Robert Crookshanks age 60, a merchant from St. John, New Brunswick is listed as "on a visit" to Portland, Maine coming over on the Schooner Recover. Francis Mitchell, age 28, a West Indies planter from St. Croix is listed as going to Ireland on the Schooner Edward and stopping at the port of New York. 1. [NYNEWYOR] Multiple census records for 1870
    2. Just a curiosity. As I was re-checking the Ancestry records for an ancestor in the 1870 New York City census', I found three census' for the same family. I understand about the second enumeration, but found no duplication of neighbors names on any of the three pages. I have no way of telling whether there are three different addresses, though there are two different wards listed. The dates for the three census' were: 10 January, 20 June, and 2 August, all 1870. The same ancestor was listed twice on the same page in the 1860 New York City census; maybe he (or his wife) was trying to get "multiple listing." 2. Janice Searle
    3. Hi listers, I am new to this list and not familiar with US research. I am trying to find further details about my husband’s great grand uncle, Alexander Reid STEVENSON, born Kinrosshire, Scotland abt 1859 (parents William STEVENSON and Elizabeth nee REID). He is last found, aged 22, in Scotland in the 1881 census in Lanarkshire as a Draper’s assistant. He then ‘turns up’ married to Mary Josephine ROAN (parents George ROAN and Margaret WORRELL or MORRELL) on 3 Jul 1888 in Manhattan, NY, NY (according to the IGI). Would like any information about this family and descendents. Any ideas on where I could locate further information about them, or perhaps even a ‘distant’ relative. Kind regards Janice Searle Darfield, NZ (a long way from everywhere!) -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. 3. forwarded with permission. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [NY-CEMETERIES] Staten Island Quarantine Cemetery Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2007 20:23:15 -0500 From: Vanessa Burzynski <vaburzynski@earthlink.net> Genealogy community can help provide a dignified re-interrment of immigrants exhumed from Staten Island Quarantine Cemetery, buried from 1799-1858. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island NY has sent a plea for letters of support for the proper re-interrment of the immigrant remains that were EXHUMED from a municipal parking lot once the site of the NYC Quarantine Hospital/cemetery. This particular NYC Quarantine station operated from 1799-1858. The immigrants who came to the USA during this time as well as those with disease living in the NYC Metropolian area and were ill (as many were) passed through the S.I. Quarantine Hosp and ultimately many died and were buried at the cemetery now a MUNICIPAL PARKING LOT. These human remains were EXHUMED in 2006. They are now held at a facility located in Brooklyn in storage boxes. Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries has offered a large section of a historic cemetery that we maintain for the proper reinterrment of these HUMAN remains. Without letters of support from you the genealogy community, these remains will be PUT BACK INTO THE PARKING LOT! Paved over once again and forgotten. Please, we ask that you take 1 minute of your time, send a letter of support to: SICemetery@aol.com . Support the reinterrment to Staten Island Cemetery. Time is once again running out for these unfortunate travelers. We in the genealogy community have accumulated their information, now we must provide to them final dignity. Your letter of support could make this possible. Please send a letter of support today to SICemetery@aol.com
