Kate, she was born Elizabeth Short b. 05 Jan 1840 in London, England. Helen Barry is her stage name. One of our family members has found records about her acting career in newspaper articles from London and New York - and marriage information. We have a few photographs of her also. But after her husband Harry Bolam died we do not know if she went back on the stage again in the USA or London or what happened to her -- the only other reference we have is that she was presumable in London for the court case in 1892. I don't know what the court case was about. One website on Stage personnel has her dates as 1840-1906 but I don't know where the 1906 comes from. (_http://footlightnotes.tripod.com/_ (http://footlightnotes.tripod.com/) ) I do not have any census records or other records for her. Hi Angela I found a cast list in the Philadelphia Inquirer for October 28, 1902, which includes Helen Barry, I can't access it, but I can read enough to know its probably her. Kate --------------------------------- Sick sense of humor? Visit Yahoo! TV's Comedy with an Edge to see what's on, when.
Hi- It seems that the 'article' was just an advertisement for a celery tonic. :) So, no evidence that she was actually in the states. Kate --------------------------------- Be a better Globetrotter. Get better travel answers from someone who knows. Yahoo! Answers - Check it out.
Hi- I saw on the Google News Archives, that Harry Bolam did die in New York, of pneumonia, according to the part of the obituary I could see. It appears she was in the States to act in 1895, according to an article in a Washington State paper of February 23, 1895. It was also in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Hi Heidi- I found your William in 1870, he's 9 years old. Julia is just listed as Hay, so no clue as to her maiden name. :) I'm wondering if you know how long any of these folks lived, I couldn't find them after 1880. I'm looking for this William who would be the son of JAMES WALKER HAY & JULIA O'CONNELL. So far, I have not made the attempt to find this particular male, but am hoping someone will come across him. An address might be Charleton St., or Hudson Street - His mother's maiden name should be O'Connell (but it could be HOLMES). If I'm confusing anyone - just imagine how I'm feeling. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Sophie NOLTE which was taken at the Edsall Studio in New York City, New York. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Sophie likely in her teens or 20's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding the woman in the photograph and this family: Sophie Helene Louise NOLTE b. Have you tried Ancestry.com's military records? They're free until 6/6 and include some Civil War material; you might get lucky. Have you found them in any US censuses? The 1880 US census (free on www.familysearch.org) has several Patrick Farrell born about 1840. I didn't examine all, but at least one has wife Catherine and son Edward age 14yrs born NY. However, they're in Brooklyn. Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could help with information on how I go about applying for a copy of a death certificate for someone who died in 1972... bearing in mind that I'm in New Zealand and cannot go personally to request it. I have been searching for information on my husband's uncle, James McCullough Cunningham for many years. I finally managed to get a copy of some SSDI records which shows the correct James and that he died in Oct 1972.....no day, just month and year. On the day I received his SSDI record I also found his arrival in New York on the SS Transylvania in 1929....think I also managed to find him in the 1930 census. WOW what a great day. Also are there any online (or not) directories/electoral rolls for the 1930 s - 1970's in 1936 when he applied for his SS number he was living at 2032 5th Avenue and was working for Union ****? Bank at 6th Avenue and 40th St. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Cheers, Kate
My ancestors had no money for a stone, much less engraving it! They started burying at Calvary in 1860s. My dad and my uncle finally bought a stone for the plot in the 1960s, when they had a little more disposable income and if happened that their dad died. All it says is the surname. Fortunately, the folks in the office at Calvary have good records and will reply if you write and ask who all is buried there and the dates, and so I was able to get all that --- but not the birth places. You CAN get the parish in Ireland info from the full marriage records at the church where they were married..... look on the LDS films for the parish, rather than just writing for a certificate. They even have the occupations of the bride, groom and their fathers (even if the father is deceased!). I haven't yet done this for NYC but got tons of info from LDS films of NJ parishes, which also had First Holy Communion and Confirmation lists! ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Connors To: ny-irish@rootsweb.com Cc: new-england-irish@rootsweb.com ; irish-american@rootsweb.com ; ireland-roll-calls@rootsweb.com ; ny-rollcall@rootsweb.com ; nynewyor@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2007 4:26 PM Subject: Re: [NYNEWYOR] [NY-IRISH] Irish in Calvary Cemetery, Queens NY I have just completed getting all the new pictures online, almost 1,000 in total. Yes, most of the gravestones are of those that mention a place in Ireland. That is the object of this project! We want to find where in Ireland our ancestors are from, it seems to be the hardest part of our ancestry. Many people from other parts of the country whose ancestors started in NY, don't have the chance to get back to NYC and check their ancestors' origins. So, this is a small part of Calvary and a marvelous gift from two who took time out of their busy lives to help others. Suggestion...even if you don't find your name, or even if you do, if you have the time to check out all the pictures, you just might find a gravestone in the background with your name that is not in the index. It should be noted, however, that previous photos only included the > gravestones of those that showed the deceaased was born in > Ireland. That is a small percentage of the Irish buried at Calvary > whether born in Ireland or not. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com Jim Garrity, List Administrator jimgarrity@earthlink.net ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYNEWYOR-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
