Has anyone out there know of a wealthy man who was named John Morris Masterson? Apparently an ancestor painted a portrait of him. The ancestor was Scotsman William Hamilton and he was a member of the Nat. Academy of Design from 1833-1841. I do not know how long he lived but I believe that he painted beyond those dates. Thanks Joan
Hello, Sort of off topic...I will be in NYC to do some genealogy stuff, but also some personal fun stuff, July 18-20. I have never been to NYC. I will be with a friend who is blind and has a guide (so that's 2 women and a dog). We want to stay in Manhattan, if possible, but don't want to ransom the ranch, either. Neither of us knows anything about NYC, so I would really appreciate an "insider" who could tell us where NOT to stay (general areas) and who would allow me to email a short list of hotels I found in the AAA guidebook and give me an opinion. I am cautious about some of the hotels that seem to be in our price range (cheap), even ones with big chain names attached. Thanks--and sorry if this is only sort of related. My geneaolgy question is: I've been to the Municipal Archives website, but it doesn't say how many microfiche readers they have. Is it usually easy to get a reader for a day--or is there a long wait? Please email me off-list if you can help. Thanks! Mona

I've "rescued" a group of photographs belonging to the KUBLER and RAUCH Families of New York. The first is a photograph of Emanuel J. RAUCH and Catherine KUBLER. There is no photographer or location identified on the photograph though it appears to have been taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Emanuel likely in his 60's or 70's at the time and Catherine about 3 years old. I have just obtained a deed for a parcel of land situated on Fifth Ave , facing Central Park, between 59th St. and 60th St. It is 50 feet south of 60th and then 25 feet south towards 59th and then 100 feet deep towards Madison Ave.It was purchased by John H. Ryerson and his wife Catherine R. dated, October 18, 1867. They paid $20,500.00 for the parcel. Can anyone tell what is located there now. Possibly an address. John and his wife are related to me through my paternal grandmothers family. Thank you, Ken Oakley ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
ED is "Enumeration District" and it is a Census Bureau term for a specific geographical area of a county in the Federal Census. It can be a whole county in one place in the country --- and only a few city blocks in another area where the population is much denser. It is a FEDERAL GOVERNMENT term which you will want to record, in addition to the street address and zip code, in order to find your people in federal census records on film and microfiche. It does not necessarily remain the same from one census to another. New map lines are drawn -- based on population -- for each decennial census. AD in New York City means "Assembly District" and it is a term the city uses to designate a specific geographic area from which one Assemblyman is elected to their city government. -- It is therefore a LOCAL GOVERNMENT term and in NYC it is helpful in finding your people on a map that shows Assembly boundaries for the correct era. These boundary lines, too, will shift with changes in population over time. IN NYC the Federal government apparently assisted the local authorities by marking on the Census Sheets the particular Assembly District in which those residents lived. This would help the city to know where the population was shrinking or growing in their city. It would also help the city fathers to draw or redraw their boundary lines for Assembly Districts within the city in order to keep them relatively similar in population so that each Assemblyman would represent a similar number of constituents and each voter's voice would have equal weight in city government. Some cities have Wards that elect a representative to the city council, and you will see the Ward number named on the Census sheet. NYC MAY HAVE BOTH wards and assembly districts, with one being divided into several of the other, I'm simply not certain as it has been a long time since I looked at one of their census sheets. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mary Thiele Fobian To: nynewyor@rootsweb.com ; MGundac102@aol.com Sent: Sunday, June 17, 2007 11:49 AM Subject: Re: [NYNEWYOR] need help with 1870 census location Peg, I can't answer your question about ED & AD.
