There are thousands - actually millions of digital books online - right now. Books that we can use (for free) in our genealogy research - county histories, city directories, genealogies and more. To make it easy to see the scope of what is available I have pulled together over 500 titles - all digital copies - and you may search on every word in each of these books. A lot of these are New York items - over 100 of them. Go ahead and use it at: http://genlibrarian.blogspot.com/ Just click on the link and start searching. It's free - no registration etc. I'll keep adding more titles every day.
Thank you Elizabeth. A LIST member has very kindly offered to get me a copy of the death cert. for Catherine. So hopefully I will be able to find out more information. Kind regards, Fiona. -----Original Message----- From: nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Elizabeth V Cardinal Sent: Friday, September 28, 2007 2:39 PM To: nynewyor@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYNEWYOR] Burials Fiona, If you mean City cemeteries, I do not think there were any at that time. You have the exact date of death and certificate number as you posted it earlier today. For two dollars you will get ur answer by sending a request into the LDS church in SLC Hello, Would anyone know what municipal graveyards would have been in operation for 1945-1965? I am trying to find where a couple Catherine Cavanagh and James McKinney would have been buried. They were both living in Manahattan at the time of death. I believe Catherine was RC and James was Presbyterian. Thanks, Fiona. Hi New York Listers, Visiting in search of the family of Hollywood legend William S. HART. I've been trying to trackdown his family and so far can only find two years. I know that his father Nicholas HART died in 1895, so nothing on the 1900 Census, but I can't find William, his mother or sisters. William S. HART was born in Newburgh, New York State, in 1864. He was the son of Nicholas HART and Rosanna (Rosamund, Rose) MCCAULEY. Nicholas was English and, according to what I can find out, from Liverpool. Rose was Irish. Seemingly, Nicholas' father was also Irish, according to the 1880 Census. I found the HARTS in Oswego, Illinois, in 1870 - Nicholas (37) a miller, with Rosamund (32), Nettie (9), William (6) and Frances (1). By 1880 the family were in New York City - Nicholas (46), Rosanna (41), Nettie (18), William (16), Frances (11) and Mary E. (8). I have read that the total number of children were 8. There was a Nicholas jnr, but he died young and William S. HART mention a Lotta. I found an autobiography of William S. on Google Book Search but it is only parts of under Limited view. I will buy the book as soon as I can but thought I would try the Lists first. Rose HART seemingly lived into the 20th Century because HART mentions being in a particular play when his mother fell ill. However, I can't find any other Census references to the HART family before 1870 and after 1880. I have access to Hertiage Quest but the search facility is limited and nothignshows up. Rose and Mary E (stands for Ellen) were together while William was touring or in a play somewhere before his big break in movies. Rose should be at least on the 1900 Census and maybe the 1910. And possibly Nicholas could be on the 1860 or even 1850 but I can't find out anything about him. HART mentioned taking his father on a holiday to his home of Liverpool and also said that his grandfather was a John Gleason HART, a lawyer. I haven't been able to prove any of this. He also mentioned that his father was from Oxford, but this doesn't seem to show up either. I'd appreciate any information on the HART family. I've surfed the Net and looked at loads of websites but all give more or less the same limited information. Best wishes, Charles P.S. Not related, just interested.
Can anyone tell me the name of the church at 59th & 5th Brooklyn NY.. Thanks. Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net

I am doing research involving many families through relation and occupation. The main families in question are KLEIN and PLAUT. The years covered are about 1860 - 1920-1930. Henry KLEIN was a kosher butcher / wholesaler. He took over the business from his father, Moses KLEIN. He, with others and especially with his son in law Samuel PLAUT had a Wholesale business. Henry died between 1894 and 1896 and Samuel Plaut ran the business, later together with his son, Walter PLAUT. The business was sold to Wilson and Co sometime between either side of 1925-30. I don;' know the exact date. I believe they operated near Washington Street stockyards and also had shops. Where would I look to find information? I have searched the papers to look for real estate or business transfers of the holdings to the Wilson Co. but have come up empty. I have found a few sites with general history of the Kosher industry but nothing specific. Any place to look to find information about individual butchers and shops? They had shops in various locations over the years. New York City Directory, 1890 Klein Henry, meat, 419 E. 48th & 818 First av. h 9 Mitchell pl. I remember the painters coming into the apartments a few times over all the years. Seemed like every 3-5 yrs? But truth be told, I would rather slap on the paint myself than move all my accumulated belongingsd every year. Sounds like a nightmare! I remember one time the painters were slow and sloppy so my father made a deal with them, leave the paint, they did, he finished it himself. This was about 1964. There was a time as well, where it was common to look through the obituaries for a newly vacant apartment and rush over to try and rent it.
