    1. [NYNEWYOR] FW: from a GSH girl...
    2. Elizabeth V Cardinal
    3. Received this and thought it may help those of you who are looking for information on the Good Shepherd Homes. From: DeerPal@aol.com [mailto:DeerPal@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, October 07, 2007 11:59 PM To: evc1369@comcast.net; ZindaLou4@aol.com; brokenunicorn13@yahoo.com Subject: from a GSH girl... Dear Elizabeth... I just discovered the site, and have been immersed in reading past postings... I was in Villa St Rose, Portland, Oregon, 1954-1956 ... You are right that the west coast homes were closed in the '70's ... However...we are still alive and kicking and still up to a lot of our old mischief... We had our first reunion in 2002 at the old school (which is now part low income housing and part a historical site) ... Over 200 girls flocked from every part of the country to be a part of that reunion ! Lots and lots of memories were shared, and lots of tears shed... It was cathartic for all of us... Since then we have kept in close touch including a site on the computer where we meet every day, several picnics, a campout, and several luncheons... We are in close contact with the Good Shepherd nuns in Portland, Sr Cathie and Sr Fran, and are now bonding together to help Sr Cathie with her womans homeless shelter... Many of us also keep in touch with Mother John Eudes and Mother John Berchmans, who are now in the main House in St Paul ... We would like to get in contact with all possible girls from other Good Shepherd homes from all over the country... We don't mind talking about our days at school...in fact, we laugh and cry together... We understand each other in ways that "outsiders" can't, and are there as a support system for each other... If you know of any other Good Shepherd girls out there, please give them my e-mail address, Grace at DeerPal@aol.com, or Linda at ZindaLou4@aol.com, or Elaine at BrokenUnicorn13@yahoo.com ... 1. [NYNEWYOR] 2 Books you should read: 1856 "how to" book for genealogists; Joel Munsell's biography
    2. Tom Kemp
    3. Books of the Day http://genlibrarian.blogspot.com/ Here is a special book - a lengthy "how-to" book written in 1856. In so many ways it could have been written today. In particular see the section beginning on page 309 about genealogy in America which begins discussing " the increasing interest displayed by our brethren across the Atlantic in whatever relates to family history and their connection with the old country, and the praiseworthy zeal displayed by them for the preservation of the already decaying early records of their remarkable country..." Sims, Richard. A manual for the genealogist, topographer, antiquary, and legal professor, consisting of descriptions of public records; parochial and other registers; wills; county and family histories; heraldic collections in public libraries. London, England: J.R. Smith, 1856. 526p. http://genlibrarian.blogspot.com/ Since this is a weekend - here is a short book that every one of us should read. It is a good thing to remember the pioneering giants who accomplished so much in publishing genealogy, history and antiquarian works. Think of the many, many books that you have used that were published by "Joel Munsell". Now, sit down down and read this brief biographical sketch of this important New Yorker published at his death in 1880. Howell, George Rogers and Frank Munsell. Biographical sketch of Joel Munsell. Boston, MA: NEHGS, 1880. 16p. http://genlibrarian.blogspot.com/ As a free service we are going to make it easy for you to build your genealogy library. You may sign-up for this free alert service at: http://genlibrarian.blogspot.com/ Every day we will highlight a few genealogy and local history books which you may download and keep. These files (PDF) are fully searchable. So at any time you may quickly search them and find your ancestors. It is our intention to make this a simple and easy way to build your genealogy library. Best of all - it is completely free.

    1. [NYNEWYOR] DUNN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lizzie DUNN which was taken at the Parkinson Studio in New York City, NY. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Lizzie likely in her teens or 20's at the time. The photograph was recovered with others belonging to the GRAHAM and DELEON Families, though I do not know what the connection might be I mention it just in case it is a clue. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. I've "rescued" and old photograph of Bob GRAHAM which was taken at the Jacques Joel Studio in New York City, NY. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Bob likely in his teens are time it was taken. The photograph was recovered with others belonging to the DELEON and DUNN Families, though I've no idea how they might be connected, I mention it simply in case it is a clue. I'm hoping to locate someone from this GRAHAM Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of family. I seem to recall that the NYC Municipal Archives has a collection of every building in the city taken around the turn of the century. There was a good deal of discussion about it on this list about 5-7 years ago and then I unsubscribed for awhile. Anyway, prints of those photos were available at that time for about $25, as I recall. You can get a map showing the plot location and a copy of the file card showing who was buried and when, ownership of the plot, etc., etc. I think the office is listed as in the city of Evanston, but maybe Skokie. 2. Yes, this is the right person. For some reason unknown to the family she went Bateman instead of her real family name of Bates. I know her husband Joseph was Jewish. Ruth was raised Episcopalian. Thank you very much for this information. Jackie ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    2. Hello, I realize that this is a long shot but here it goes. My Great Aunt--Ruth Tumpeer-nee Bates passed away last year and I am hoping that someone can tell me anything about her. Her last residence was at 24 Central Park West, New York, New York. I know she was married to a Joseph Tumpeer (1898-1991). To the best of my knowledge they did not have any children. They must of been married in the early 1930's. They had a home in Chicago and New York. Ruth was the daughter of George Walter Bates and Ellen Maude James and was born in Detroit, Michigan. Thanks in advance, Jackie ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. Sorry for Cross Listing but not sure if Brooklyn was considered NY in the late 1800's Margaret CORNEY, date could be birth or christening, 24 March 1887. Could be east side of NY or Brooklyn. In 1889 The family was in Toronto, Canada where last children were born.. On 1901 Census, Jane CORNEY is living in Brooklyn, with children Mabel Corney, Margaret Corney, Edward Corney and Lilian Irene Corney. Rest of family was in Toronto ON Canada. Am unfamiliar with what is available for 1883 to 1900 vital statistics online. Is there a site to check to see if birth registered in order to order certificate? Appreciate any assistance and information. pic
