Well, then, here is my problem. Back when I started research, and didn't know what I was doing, I used the wrong census record to construct the family for a child of my g grandfather. I just received some really scanty buriel records for his family plot and found out that he died quite early. In fact, looking at a city directory, and the fact that he died one month and a 5 month old baby died the next month ( the addresses being nearly the same) made me think that he had recently married, had a child and then at least he and the baby died. After that he doesn't appear in the city directory. He died in 1895, so in 1880 he is still at home and in 1890 there is no census and obviousley he isnt the one I found on the 1910 census. I only have a buried date of Aug 6, 1895- how can I find out his death date, wife's name, if the baby is his, and of what they died? May I say thank you to the people who have given me ideas of where to look for Albert (and maybe even his aunt [I think] Julia). I'm not completely satisfied with what I have uncovered and that's mainly because as far as I know, no one ever, ever mentioned any CT. or MASS. connection. I did end up finding a Julia Holmes of about the right age, born in CT.in about 1845. Mine was born in 1844. At some point she'd said her maiden name was HOLMES, but otherwise she gave her maiden name as O'Connell. Any mention of her birth place always said NY. She did also have a Charles Holmes as a godfather for one of her sons, and Albert did have a brother named Charles. Oh, me! That father's name was JOHN HOLMES. Anyway, thank you again to all those who have tried to direct me in a positive direction. I've not mentioned anyone specifically, because I might forget some one, so - thank you to all. I'll just keep looking - and asking - and, etc. LOL Heidi ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Please understand that you should never go by the birth year on census records. They are almost never right. Half of my relatives had a 5-10 year age difference. But were still the right people. -----Original Message----- From: nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Iamhydee@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, October 24, 2007 3:06 PM To: NYNEWYOR-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NYNEWYOR] Help with ALBERT HOLMES May I say thank you to the people who have given me ideas of where to look for Albert (and maybe even his aunt [I think] Julia). Hi, Was hoping someone could help me here. I sent off weeks ago for the copy of my uncle's death certificate to the New York Dept of Health & Mental Hygiene. It arrived today and at first I got very excited as it showed he was a widower and his son was the informant.....but then I looked again carefully. I had supplied the following information:- Name: James McCullough CUNNINGHAM SSN: 092-05-0614 (as per the SSDI) Date of Death: 10/0/1972 (again as per the SSDI...no day given, just month and year) Father's Name: Robert Cunningham Mother's Maiden Name: Wharton The certificate I received had the following information: Name: James Cunningham SSN: 111-12-0223 Date of Death: 3/3/1972 Father's Name: James Mother's Maiden Name: Barron Nothing matches.....can I send this back with my original request (copy of which was enclosed with the certificate) and ask them to send the CORRECT certificate? Cheers, Kate Wellington NZ
Kate, Thanks a lot for finding them. Mary Eagan is Felix's mother in law and I suspect Anna is Felix's sister in law. I downloaded the image from Ancestry. Ray I found Felix indexed as Felitt McBride in 1870, Mary Eagan, age 55 was head of household, Felix was 30, Mary was 20, and I'm guessing Anna, age 22, was Felix's sister. 1870; Census Place: New York Ward 18 District 14, New York, New York; Roll: M593_1002; Page: 520; Image: 265. Let me know if you need the image- Kate
I am the great grand nephew of Felix A McBride bc 1838 NYC, son of Aaron McBride and Mary Tone. Felix married Mary Egan bc 1845 Ireland, daughter of John Egan and Mary Maghar [?] They were married in NYC on 11 Jul 1869 by a Rev. P J McGuire, assistant pastor of an unknown RC church according to their Marriage Cert. I cannot find Felix or Mary in the 1870 or 1880 census. Does anyone know these McBride's? Ray in Georgia

In the 1910 census index, I don't see an Albert E. Holmes residing Manhattan in 1910. There are three Alberts, but they all have different initials. I would like to take a look at the census to discover Albert's father's birthplace. It would also be helpful to know the full name of Julia's grandchild who was living with Albert. Do you already have Julia HOLMES Hay in any census? Iamhydee@aol.com wrote: Hello, listers, I am looking for birth certificate information for an ALBERT E. HOLMES, born in NY ca. 1868. What I now have is: a JULIA HAY, who on one of her children's birth certificates says her maiden name was HOLMES. One of Julia's grandsons lived with Albert, so - that's why I'm looking for more info on that particular Holmes family. Are these people related? Difficult, I know, but - isn't that what genealogy is all about? I would be so thrilled if someone would be able to help me with this request. You indicate you have found him on Manhattan census records, but you don't indicate what census years you already have found. Finding him in the 1870 or 1880 census is a probable way of determining his father's name and his mother's first name. An Albert of the right age is enumerated in Brooklyn in 1870 with parents John and Addie HOLMES. It means you are paying over forty dollars a month for something that only cost's 29.95 a month if billed monthly and even less if you took out an annual subscription and paid in one lump payment. Monthly $29.95/month after trial I wouldn't say that that price is a discount. I pay 40 something a month for a year round subscription- a bit more than paying for the entire year. I live near Ancestry and am interested to know what this all means. Sue ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Bill, It's kinda hard to answer your question but have you looked thru what the LDS/FHC has listed on familysearch.org? They have a number of early NYC records. I checked "Old Merchants of NYC" for your guy and did not find him listed. Do you know where in Scotland he came from and what year he was born? I know that many weavers and shoemakers came from the Glasgow area of Scotland. Have you checked the books, NY Alien Residents by Scott and Conway and also the book Early NY Naturalizations by Kenneth Scott? Most decent libraries would probably have these two books even if you are in Ca. Call around and see. Besides looking thru records, what are you trying to find out about your guy? Have you been able to find him in the early NYC census? If not it could be that he was not head of the household and living with father or brother. Have you check early NYC directories (which you can get some on fiche at your local FHC) to see if he is listed in a time period that you know him to be there? Are there any other Forsyth names listed at the same address as your person? If so, there is a good chance that they are related (as in father or brother). See if you can get someone to check year after year in the directories and see where his name disappears...that might give you an idea of when he left NYC for Ohio.
