    3. I recently found a death record for an ancestor who died in 1840 which states he was buried in the Middle Dutch Cemetery in New York City. Does anyone know if they keep records and if they are available to the public? -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    1. [NYNEWYOR] Thomas and Eugene McMahon
    2. I'm trying to trace some cousins of my grandmother's who emigrated to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I found the ship's manifest for Eugene McMahon, who emigrated in 1915 and had a brother Thomas living at 160 East 44th Street. There are 25 Thomas McMahons shown in Manhattan in 1910. I found one living on what appears to be 44th Street with his brother-in-law Jeremiah (can't make out last name) and sister Nora (supervisor district 1, enumeration district 1345, can't make out ward). I'd appreciate any advice as to how to learn more about Thomas, Nora, or Eugene. Thank you! Diane Culhane

    3. The same New York City vital records indexes (and other indexes too) are online on both the www.Italiangen.org and www.Germangenealogygroup.com websites. All New Yorkers are indexed, regardless of national origin. Since you are close to Salt Lake, you could view microfilms there of all the indexes and also the individual certificates -- and take any photocopies you need. As I recall, Salt Lake has all the same films that the NYC Municipal Archives has. Much cheaper than going to NYC! Back when I started research, and didn't know what I was doing, I used the wrong census record to construct the family for a child of my g grandfather. I just received some really scanty buriel records for his family plot and found out that he died quite early. In fact, looking at a city directory, and the fact that he died one month and a 5 month old baby died the next month ( the addresses being nearly the same) made me think that he had recently married, had a child and then at least he and the baby died. After that he doesn't appear in the city directory. He died in 1895, so in 1880 he is still at home and in 1890 there is no census and obviousley he isnt the one I found on the 1910 census. I only have a buried date of Aug 6, 1895- how can I find out his death date, wife's name, if the baby is his, and of what they died? Sue ----- Original Message ----- the body of the message

    3. I am involved in a huge research project for a published book about my grandmother; I have so many more records to get, that will help, that I am thinking it might be cheaper to go to go to NYC and stay with my nutty twin uncles rather than send for more records. I have a lot more research to do. When you are there you can photocopy yourself for practically nothing. I know they can do a search, and I have other records I need- but it adds up and takes long. I would love to go to this new cemetery, now that I know it is there and see if there are tombstones.. Until I came onto these lists, I had no idea there was so much available on the net. I live near SL and can go there myself and plan to next week. I was so dissappointed when I found no 1885 census the last time. Why was there no state census for that year? That would answer so much for me. But there are other ways that will take more time. 3. His name was Phillip Scherrer, son of Peter Scherrer and Elizabeth Pohle Scherrer. There were 6 Peter Scherrerrs in NYC at the time. Peter was a blacksmith and after Phillips death, it looks like they developed a livery and funeral business in a different part of town, and all moved out of the area they were in- Scherrer Brothers- some of the older boys becoming a part of it and possibly a brother or two.. Phillip was born about 1858, and had the following siblings, whom you can only find on the 1880 census- Barbara, George, Mary, Evangeline, Anne, Edward, and a William who missed on that census. Phillip died at 935 9th Ave and was interred on August 6, 1885, and the baby, Ernst, died at 931 9th Ave, and was interred on July 12, 1885. ( looks like the baby died first, not later) and his ; the mother was interred Aug 18, 1878, address being 633 9th Ave. There are some variations in their 9th Ave address in the city directories. I don't know if this means they owned several buildings or it was just an error in the directory. I know all of the marriages except William. Now I don't know Phillips.
