    3. Hi Debbi! i forwarded your email to another Rootsweb list called "NY IRISH"...Have you found her in a Ship's List to see who she might have travelled with? Have you tried the LDS site where you can type in any name and find info? (that's "family search.org") As to why someone would come to the US..remember the devastation of the potato famine 1847 onward. If she were living in Manchester she probably went there to find work..domestic or in a factory. My own family story is almost the same and very common. MY grtgndfthr, born in 1854 in Ireland came to NYC/Manhattan..and never left. Came to make a life..started as a stable boy and eventually a coachman on the streets of Manhattan. And here I am still in NYC. My mother's family lived in the West 40's too...Hell's Kitchen..on West 47th St, W 49th and W 51st. It is not impossible but likely that my Griffin family knew your family up there!! Good luck! 1. [NYNEWYOR] 1875 NYS Census update for Troy transcription project
    2. Pat Connors
    3. I am happy to tell you that the 9th ward of this census has gone online (Troy section of my website) tonight. This ward contains 4,804 dwellings, 7,106 families and 4,184 individuals. This brings the total so far for the online census at 34,877 individuals. We have completed the 10th ward and it is currently being put together and proofread and should go online sometime at the end of the week. The 11th ward is almost completely transcribed and we are currently working on the 12th and 13th wards. The goal is to complete the census and have it online by the end of the year. After that, I will combine it ( like the 1880 and 1900 censuses) to create a name index for easier searching. The people to thank for taking time out of their busy lives to transcribe the pages are: Lynn Grice, Sharon King, Bob McConihe, Joe Murnane, Marialice Mangan, Shirley Becker, Kay Brearton, Ronnie Lorentz, Gary Carver, and Chuck Casale. Without their help this would not be online. Remember this is basically an index and the census should be referred to for more information. Also, read the notes, they list the problems we encountered when transcribing the pages. If you would like to help, email me off line. All you need is a database program, like Works or Excel and a little time. After we get this census online, our next project will be the 1870 census. -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com

    3. I am trying to contact the photo department at the Municipal records building in order to get a picture of the building my Grandfather had a Restaurant/Tavern. Unfortunately, I do NOT know the address and the last time I was there was in 1940. I know that Peter Styvesant or Peter Copper village has take over that whole area of the East side from about 15th to 19th Streets after WWII. Can anyone suggest how I can get a photo or the address for this place , it was on the corner of one of theses streets from 15th to 18th and 2nd Ave. I have tried looking thru Trows directories abut can find no listing for it for years 1922-34. My grandfather lived close by and walked to work, not sure but think on 19th St. Thank you.

    1. [NYNEWYOR] CHARLES BROWNING-1861 CENSUS
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Listers, I hope that I am on the correct List for my enquiry. I am looking for anyone who may help me with the family of Charles John BROWNING, born New York (according to family bible written in Australia) 16th May 1853. I have found in the 1860 US Federal Census an entry for New York Ward 7 District 1, New York, New York. This lists Household Members: Richd BROWNING Age 26 Hanns BROWNING Age 22 Jno BROWNING Age 6 Chas BROWNING Age 4 Willm BROWNING Age 3 Geo BROWNING Age 1 Jno BROWNING Age 38 Emma BROWNING Age 7 Eliza EGERTON Age 19 Joseph MERNICK Age 23 Given that while the family bible gives a birth year of 1853 his marriage certificate gives 1852 and his death certificate gives 1854 then this census date which gives 1856 is not altogether improbable. Does anyone know of this family? We do not know why he came to Australia (it was really after the gold rushes). He tried his hand at many, white collar activities, and is considered by later generations as something of a snake oil salesman. He was my G grandfather. What does the abbreviation "Jno" mean? Is "Hanns" a female name as well as German male name? Cheers Peter Melbourne Australia

    1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] Middle Dutch Cemetery
    2. I don't know if this will help answer your question or not but I sent it to you as a reference or aide to your search. Rosalie Fellows Barley in 1954 wrote a book called "Guide to Gene. and Biograph. sources in NYC". It's an old source but it can sometimes be helpful. She says that your church dissolved in 1844 and then became the New Dutch church. It was located in the years 1729-1844 at Nassau and Cedar in NYC. She goes on to state that the records (in 1954, at least for the church and maybe cemetery) were stored at the churches of the Collegiate Church at 45 John Street. I believe now that they are part of the Archives of the RC in America located in New Brunswick, NJ. If you "google" Archive of the Reformed Dutch Church you will come up with several helpful sites. As you probably know that no new burials in South Manhattan after 1851. Real Estate became so expensive that many churches sold off the cemetery property for the cash. In most cases the bodies were removed without much care in keeping track of names. Those churches that dug up the bodies buried them again in new cemetery plots. Some never dug up the bodies and old NYC is buried right on top of them. In any case the church cemetery you are looking for more than likely no longer exists. Sometime the names of the re-interred are given in the written minutes of the churches. Good luck to you, Joan -------------- Original message -------------- From: Pat Connors <nymets11@pacbell.net> > I recently found a death record for an ancestor who died in 1840 which > states he was buried in the Middle Dutch Cemetery in New York City. > Does anyone know if they keep records and if they are available to the > public? > > -- > Pat Connors, Sacramento CA > http://www.connorsgenealogy.com > > Jim Garrity, List Administrator > jimgarrity@earthlink.net > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > NYNEWYOR-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message
