    1. [NYNEWYOR] Finding an article or obituary
    2. I would like to find an obituary or news article about the death of a relative in Brooklyn in 1946. Bernard Johnston was a welder at the Todd Shipyard when he fell to his death on Nov. 24, 1946. Any suggestions much appreciated. Diane

    3. Hi Noelle, Thank you for responding. On his marriage certificate in Sydney in 1884 he states taht he was 32 year old. On his death certificate (Admittedly not completed by him) he is stated to be 75 years of age and in OZZ for 53 years. I don't suppose that he could have been in Brooklyn in 1880. So far as the family know (or admit) he was not part of a family group who came here. In those days most of our migrants came from Britain and Ireland with some from Germany (mine came in 1856). In those years the US was a destination for migrants not a source. Given the jobs I have found him in I, along with other descendents have the feeling that he was a bit of a snake oil salesman. Where Are you in Ohio? I have been to Cleveland a few times on business but did not get far from there in Ohio. 1. [NYNEWYOR] New items on Steve Morse's One-Step Website
    2. Diane Jacobs
    3. Steve Morse's website has undergone a major change to make it easier to use. He added a two-level menu in the top left corner and you can select the tool you want directly from the menu. This means you no longer need to scroll through his entire site looking for the tool, unless you want to read a more detailed description than can appear in a menu. He's also added a new section, all about Genetic Genealogy and DNA. Looks like everybody is getting involved in DNA. His new section contains six DNA-related tools. And he's also added an English language front end to the new database that went on line recently regarding the fallen Soviet soldiers in World War II and after. The website that has that database is all in Russian, so not only couldn't you read the instruction but you also couldn't type in a name because it needs to be in Cyrillic. Steve's front end takes care of both of those problems, and he also transliterates the results found back into Latin characters so you can read it. This tool appears in two places on Steve's site -- in the Foreign Alphabets section and in the Holocaust And Eastern Europe section. If you have any questions or comments about any of these items, please contact Steve directly rather than asking me. His email address is at the top of his site, which is at http://stevemorse.org Diane Jacobs Somerset, NJ

You have probably done this but sometimes the obvious eludes even the best of us :-) have you checked the later census for this family to see if they are still in the US. He was a second cousin of my mother's, and I suspect a victim of shellshock (now known as PTSD). Given the limited care in those days, he probably died in the hospital. Diane

    1. [NYNEWYOR] American Samuels' cousins
    2. Myra & Peter Waddell
    3. I would dearly like to find my "missing" first cousins or their descendants and am posting this in case there is a faint possibility that someone reading this will know of them. They are/were known by the names,Moe, Mickey, and Rita, although, at birth, they were named Morris, Mark and Rachel. Morris and Mark were born in England in about 1920 (now 87) and 1922 (now 85) and Rachel in New York in about 1926 (now 81). Their parents were Simon (Sam - but maybe named Ephraim on his birth certificate!) Samuels - a twin (to Lewis who was maybe named Laiser on his birth certificate!) who was born in New York in May, 1894 - and Miriam/Marion (nee O'Neil) who I believe was born in Ireland. I found the family in the 1930 census but nothing since. Rita was a singer and, apparently, used to sing on cruise ships, sometimes taking her mother with her. Rita's professional name was Peggy O'Neil. Moe was last heard of, by family, in Riverhead, NY, Mickey in Chicago (it is believed he had five children) and Rita in Manhattan. I don't know Rita's married name. Please, does anyone know these people, know how I can contact them or their children/grandchildren or suggest how I might try to discover them? I have passed on all the information I have. Myra in Adelaide, South Australia.

    3. This sounds like: "Dr. Emily Jones Barker" - there are several articles about her that I found in www.GenealogyBank.com<http://www.genealogybank.com/> At the time (1910) she was the longest serving officer of Wellesley College - she resigned her position as "resident physician" at the college in 1910. She was elected to that position in 1875. It might be that the Wellesley College Archives would like this portrait. In addition to her name someone has also noted "Wellesley 1878" on the back of the photograph suggesting that she graduated from Wellesley College in 1878. The photograph was probably taken about that time with Emily likely in her 20's at the time it was taken. I am hoping to locate someone from Emily's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family.
