YOu have listed four surnames and no details. If you are seeking yours mother's brother who may still be alive, what is his name and when and where was he born ?? I am up against a brick wall and hope someone may be able to give me advice. I am trying to find current family so I can get answers to my mother's family. My mother (deceased) was estranged from her family, so I never knew anything about them except what she told me. Most of what she told me was not true. This I found out after her passing, when I decided to research her family. All I ever had was her birth date and place and her parent's names. From that,I found her parent's marriage certificate and it opened many doors. I have been able to get a great amount of information on her Dayton line (descendants of Ralph Dayton); some, but little information on her Dewar line, which led me to research the name Albertson; and a bit more on her Hein/Heine line, which led to research the Berger line. One thing my mother did tell me...there were two "step brothers". It turns out these were not "stepbrothers", they were her brothers. I have managed to find out the name, date of birth and death of one of her brothers by getting a copy of my grandfather's death certificate, where he signed. I found his military record and where he is buried. There are no obituaries: not for my grandfather, not for my uncle. I have contacted the funeral homes...no obituaries. The funeral director was not willing to give me any information. The cemetery was only willing to tell me where he died. Since it has been 50 yrs. since my uncle's birth and he is deceased, I can get a birth certificate (this is my next step). My dilemma...how can I get my uncle's death certificate? This would give me at least one more name to search (maybe...if his wife signed the death certificate, she may have remarried, since he died at age 45). I am not a direct descendant, so getting this is next to impossible. How ! does one find living family w/o hiring a private investigator? I would love to find my mother's youngest brother,if he is still alive and any of their children. They may be able to give me answers to family that I have no way of finding out. Is there any way I can get more recent information by doing my own research? I love doing my family research and I would love to connect with my lost family. Is there any hope? I appreciate your suggestions. ************** Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! Try The New York Times, New York Herald. Depending on which borough they died in some local papers like the Long Island Star Journal, The Journal American (Queens). Newsday (Long Island). Don't know about Brooklyn, perhaps Brooklyn Eagle?. Hopefully someone can direct you to the other boroughs newspapers. Post the person's name. Many on the list have NY Times access and perhaps can help you further. If he had family members who passed prior to 1948 on line indexes are also available. I am new to this list and new to searching records in New York City. Could someone please tell me how I can obtain an obituary for a person who died in New York City on July 26, 1952. I have written to the NY Public Library. They don't do searches for obituaries. Any suggestions as to how I can find the obituary would be very appreciative. ************** Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! Hi Liz, For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the North Shore Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): North Shore Public Library 250 Route 25A Shoreham, NY 11786 Tel: 631/929-4488 Fax: 631/929-4551 eMail: nspl@suffolk.lib.ny.us http://nspl.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ The pertinent geography: Rocky Point is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north central part of Suffolk County. There are 8 villages (municipal corporations) and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Brookhaven. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Rocky Point in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Sound Beach and Long Island Sound; on the east by the Village of Shoreham and the Hamlet of East Shoreham and the Hamlet of Ridge; on the south by the Hamlet of Middle Island; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Miller Place and the Hamlet of Sound Beach. For a map of the Hamlet of Rocky Point: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c2/Rocky-point-ny-map.gif And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 32 villages and 125 hamlets), the Hamlet of Rocky Point has a different border than does the "Rocky Point, NY 11778" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Rocky Point, NY 11778" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Rocky Point and a place can have other than a "Rocky Point, NY 11778" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Rocky Point). Those places that have a "Rocky Point, NY 11778" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Rocky Point are in the Hamlet of Sound Beach; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Rocky Point that have a "Shoreham, NY 11786" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2007 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Rocky Point in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 24 (map) and 25 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
I am researching Frederick Heine, born in Germany. He came to the U.S. around 1881, and became a U.S. citizen in 1886. I found him in the 1900 census living in Rocky Point,L.I.,NY. He was married to Elizabeth Fuchs (from Germany) at some time in the late 1890's. They had two children: Florence,b. @ 1898 and John Frederick, b. in 1900. Frederick is listed in an old phone book from Brookhaven Twnshp in Suffolk County,L.I. as living in Rocky Point and being a farmer. Although I have no records yet of Frederick being married prior to ELizabeth Fuchs, he must have been. In the 1900 census, there are other children listed: Geo, Lizzie, Amanda, all born between 1889-1894. Since I have John Frederick's birth certificate, I know that only he and Florence are Elizabeth Fuchs' children. I can not be sure what happened to Frederick after 1900, but I found John Frederick's Military Service record listing his mother as Elizabeth Berger in the Bronx. After researching this, I see that Elizabeth, somewhere between 1900 and 1910 took John Paul Berger as a spouse or partner and they had a son, Paul Berger, born around 1908. I found a death certificate for a Frederick Heine in NYC in 1906, listing him as married, but the death certificate is signed by the doctor (not by any family member). This makes me wonder if Frederick and Elizabeth were estranged or divorced? I am not sure whether Elizabeth married John Paul Berger after Frederick Heine died (if in fact, the death certificate I have for 1906 is the same Frederick Heine. I think it is) or if they were divorced. After the 1900 census, I have not been able to find any of the other children of Frederick (Geo, Lizzie, Amanda). If any of this sounds remotely familiar, I would love to hear from you. If you have come across any of these names in your searches and can share I would appreciate it. Names I am searching: Dayton (of the Long Island Daytons), Dewar, Heine/Hein, Fuchs, Berger, Albertson. I have been researching John Benjamin Dewar without much success. Any advice would be very much appreciated. This is what I have. John Benjamin Dewar was born between 1863-1868. According to all Federal Census records (1900,1910,1920 and 1930), he was born in California. According to his marriage certificate (he married Annie Eliza Dayton in L.I., NY), he was born in Vermont and his parents are Constantin Dewar and Margret Bird. I have searched 1880 census for all of these names and I have found nothing. I can not find Constantin and/or Margret. I tried Constantine, all the Johns with Margrets (Margarets), but I find nothing...not from California, not from Vermont, not from anywhere. It seems strange to me that they would not be listed in 1870 and 1880 census somewhere in the U.S., if they were in the U.S., and if the names are accurate. What I know of John Benjamin Dewar...he married Annie Eliza Dayton, daughter of Robert Henry Dayton (descendants of Ralph Dayton, L.I.,NY). They were married in L.I. and had three children that lived (there was possibly a fourth child that did not survive). They lived their life in NY (Bronx, NYC, and areas of Long Island). John Benjamin died in the 1930's and is buried near Glen Cove, Long Island. I would love to know more about is family, but I am not sure where to go from here. If any of this sounds familiar or if you have any advice,I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. The Catholic Church is not required to keep records of burial so they will not be able to help you. Baptismal records are mandated and should either be in the parish office, transferred to another parish if that one has closed or in the archives. I believe that both St. Simon Stock and Our Lady of the Scapular, both Carmelite Churches were in that area. I also believe one has closed but the records are with the other parish. Sorry but I do not have time to look them up for you now. The Arch-Diocese of NY does have a website that lists all of their parishes. You can find it on google and hopefully it will help you. Good Luck Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
I am trying to determine which Roman Catholic Church would had been close to Manhattan Borough NY NY 328 E. 33rd Street according to the 1900 census. Charles & Elizabeth McCarthy had a baby, James, who died 21 Jan 1887 3 Months old and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, 49-02 Laurel Hill Blvd., Flushing NY with his parents and one other sibling. I've not been able to acquire a death record for James so thought perhaps the Catholic diocese might be able to further assist in obtaining a Christening Record and/or Death Record for James. I am in the process of ordering the Death Records for Charles 18 Dec 1903 and for his son Edward 08 Jan 1898. I've recently received the Death Certificate for Elizabeth which led me to contact the cemetery. There's a wonderful lady there, Joann, that filled my heart which such joy after telling me who is buried with Elizabeth so I can pursue this further.
