Liz, New York State does not maintain vital records for New York City. Because Hempstead is in Nassau County, the state is your best bet, but I don't know if the require knowing the town. German names beginning with SCH. are traditionally hard to find. Rather than looking for draft records which may be non exustent you may want to consider the W thing. Post what you know/have about a apecific individual and perhaps others may have better luck in identyfying them in various records. Does anyone know if non citizens were not registered for the draft. I am going crazy trying to find the brothers of my g grandfather Peter Scherrer, from Hesse Darmstadt, I can find Peter's family and all of their children's marriages, etc, but I know the names of some brothers who had a funeral business in the middle to late 1800's and I cannot find them on census records, military, all immigration dates don't fit- I am wondering, if since the Hessians were just picked off the street by the Duke, and they escaped to NYC and other places to avoid it, if they just laid low in this country. This is the most confusing family I have tried to figure out. They are in the city directory but finding them on any other record is zero. I have an Adam and a John Adam and I am not quite sure if they are different or one in the same. I have a gt grandfather named Peter Scherrer, a blacksmith from Hesse Darmstadt. I can find information on him and his wife Elizabeth, and ther 9 children and grandchildren. Peter and his brothers formed a funeral business called Scherrer Brothers. It is obvious from the city directory which of his brothers were involved. All I can find is the info in the city directories. The first person to show up is John Adam Scherrer in 1847. I believe he is the Adam that can be found who was born in 1829 and died in 1894. He is there off and on and there are even some years when the city directories do not have any Scherrer's spelled any way. Then there is an Adam. He show up more often, and it is hard to tell if he is the same man or a different one. He is not the one that you can consistently find married to a Margareth, all the way up to the 1930 census. There is one time when both are listed in the directory at the same time, both listed at the business and one at the business and the house. Then there is one time when they both are listed at the business but different houses, if I remember correctly. Those two are the ones I can start off with. I think that Adam's wife's name was Mary as she is listed at the same house, one year, as a seamstress. If anyone can find John Adam on anything or Adam, let me know. I still would like to know if non citizens were registered for the draft, as there are some possibilities with naturalization records after the Civil War. Sue

I am wondering if some of these people got registered after the civil war to avoid conscription, since that is what they were escaping, as I do find a few naturalization registrations after the civil war- Sue

Hi Everyone. Does anyone know if NARA'S indexes for vital records for NYS and the five boroughs has records for 1930s? I decided to send for my uncle's birth certificate (knowing his date of birth) to the Town of Hempstead, guessing that he was born in West Hempstead like my mother (since they were only 3 yrs apart) and I just got a response saying they have no record for him (another $22 gone). Prior to this I contacted the Village of Hempstead because there is a very nice lady there who will at least tell you whether they have the record before you send the fee (that is if you know the date) and I had no luck there either. The clerk at the T of H said I should send to Albany. They would have the records for NYS and he five boroughs. Before I spend another $22+ and wait several months, I thought I should check the indexes first, so does anyone know if NARA would have birth indexes for 1933? If so, does anyone do any searches at NARA? Thanks, Liz _________________________________________________________________ Reveal your inner athlete and share it with friends on Windows Live. http://revealyourinnerathlete.windowslive.com?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WLYIA_whichathlete_us
