    1. [NYNEWYOR] 1925 REISEL; 1847 WRIGHT, 1913 WESTELAKEN
    2. Mrs. Mac REISEL of New York city is a guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. ROTE-ROSEN. The Poultley Journal [VT] http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=59595 ============================== Obituary Died in New York, March 25, Rev. Theodore Sedgwick WRIGHT, the esteemed pastor of the first colored Presbyterian Church in that city, aged 50. Mr. WRIGHT was a spiritually minded man, and laborerd in season and out of season to promote the temporal and spiritual welfare of his flock, to whom he was much attached, and by whom he was greatly beloved. He was a member of the Executive Committees both of the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society and of the American Missionary Association. Within a few years, he was chosen Moderator of the third Presbytery of the city of New York. A year or two since, his health began to fail, and in company with his aged and venerated father, who survives him, he went to Nassau, N.P., where he was received with much attention by the Governor and ministers. Although he felt keenly the wrongs perpetrated upon his people, he made it a constant practice to pray for slaveholders, while he poured out his whole heart in supplication for the oppressed. I well remember that, some years since, a distinguished Southern lawyer, who was also an elder in the Presbyterian church, and a slaveholder, accompanied me to a lecture of Mr. WRIGHT's, and, after hearing the prayer, the sermon, the singing, and observing the respectable appearance of the congregation, and the neatness of their place of worship, he exclaimed, "What a sight; what an excellent prayer and discourse; how respectable everything appears here. I was never in such a place before; I have been greatly interested in the services; I am determined I will not live as I have done," &c. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, and the corpse was borne on the shoulders of some young men, while the pall-bearers, minister and elders, black and white, and a long procession of men, followed to the church of the deceased, where appropriate funeral services were performed. Thus has died a most estimable minister of the gospel, in the midst of usefulness, leaving but few so holy or beloved. The National Era---8 April 1847 published in Washington D. C. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=47797 ============================= Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Von de WESTELAKEN, of New York, are the guests of Mr. Von de WESTELAKEN's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Von de WESTELAKEN, at their home in North Washington street. 1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] OBITUARY SOURCES
    2. Peter Strauss
    3. Hi Barb, Are these easily accessible, to someone in New York, and are they indexed? I have a G grandfather apparently born in NYC C1855. I have found a census record which may assist in finding him as follows:- 1860 US Census Name:- Chas BROWNING Age 1860:-4 Home in 1869:-New York Ward 7 District1, New York, New York Gender:-Male Post Office:-New York Household Members:- Richd BROWNING-Age: 26 Hanns BROWNING-Age: 22 Jno BROWNING-Age: 6 Chas BROWNING-Age: 4 Willm BROWNIG-Age: 3 Geo BROWNING-Age: 1 Jno BROWNING-Age: 38 Emma BROWNING-Age: 7 Eliza Egerton-Age: 19 Joseph Mernick-Age: 23 He is a bit of a mystery here in Australia as all that the family knows, or perhaps in the past wished to know, is that he claimed to have been born in NYC. He was a bit of a snake oil salesman from all accounts and had many "professions" over his years here from C 1875 until he died in Sydney in 1929. Perhaps a death record of one on the above list may indicate who my Charles John BROWNING was. I have found that there are no birth records for New York for this period. Could any lister help please perhaps by checking the deaths referred to in your listing? 3. Thanks, Laura- I will look that up- I am so used to using libraries and ancestry that I am not always familiar with all of the online sites. Sue -----Original Message----- From: nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gothamgal Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2008 10:56 PM To: nynewyor@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYNEWYOR] Civil War Enrollment/Albany Vital Records Sue, NY Civil War enrollments (registrations) are at NARA in DC. This includes the lists of everyone eligible to be drafted, whether or not they were actually drafted. Look for Record Group 110: "Records of the Provost Marshall General's Bureau; Enrollment Lists and Corrections 1863-1865". These are sorted by Congressional District, then by Class, and then alphabetically by first letter of the surname. The records I've examined for District 26 (Tioga county, NY) are ledger books with the following column headings: Residence, Name, Age as of 1st July 1863, White or Colored, Profession/Occupation/Trade, Married or Unmarried, Place of Birth (State/Territory/or Country), Former Military Service (this means in the Civil War), and Remarks. Note that places of birth tend to be rather broad like "Ireland", "Pennsylvania", or "New York." There is nothing listed to indicate citizenship, but as the History Channel link provided by someone else seems to indicate, citizenship seems not to have been a requirement. The classes are as follows: Class 1 = Everyone 20-35 subject to military duty, and married persons 35-45 subject to military duty Class 2 = Everyone else subject to military duty These Enrollment Books are good resources for identifying men, WHETHER OR NOT they served in the Civil War. The Enrollment lists were used in preparation for the draft. As you are probably aware, all of the drafted men (a subset of the Enrollment lists) had to pass a Medical Examination. Men who passed could pay $300 to be exempt from service. Ultimately, the number of men who were drafted AND served was relatively small compared to the number of men who were drafted. For example, on a page of 42 men drafted from Tioga county, NY, one was sent to rendezvous (to serve), four paid $300 to be excused, and the rest failed the medical test! You can look at the Draft records at NARA in DC as well (also in Record Group 110). Entry 2212 contains descriptive books of drafted men sorted by Congressional District. The headings on these oversize ledgers are as follows: Number, Name, Age, Eyes, Hair, Complexion, Height (Ft/In), State or Kingdom where born, Town or County where born, Occupation, Enrolled year/place, Drafted (When/Where), Term (years), and Remarks. Note that many physical description columns are left blank (at least in the books I've seen). Place of birth tends to be along the lines of "NY/Tompkins County" or "Mass" or "Holland." Again, there is nothing to indicate citizenship. Note also that this particular series doesn't SEEM to be sorted by or include information about place of residence (just Congressional District), making it more difficult to isolate men of the same name. For those men who were drafted AND served, you can check Record Group 110, Entry 2214 (at NARA in DC): "Descriptive Book of Recruits for Draft 1863-1864" which is also sorted by Congressional District. These ledgers contain similar (although not identical) information as the Adjutant-Generals Reports. The bonus is that this Entry contains place of residence (as opposed to just place of muster), and physical descriptions. This does NOT include information on place of birth or citizenship, so you'd need to cross reference back to the Enrollment and Draft records for that information. I believe the Medical Examination Records are also at NARA, but don't have those notes with me at the moment. The records are all excellent, but sometimes researching them may feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. However, when tracing men who DIDN'T serve in the Civil War, this may be an excellent resource. -- Laura H. Congleton PS. To the person looking for vital records in Albany, you can view the indices for free at the NY State Archives in Albany and drop off your official order in a box there that is delivered to the Vital Records folks on a daily basis. You'll get your certificates in about 4 weeks, as opposed to the usual 8-month wait. 1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] Scherrer
    2. John A Scherrer is listed as passing in 1894 not Adam. Who is in his resting place with him ?? While Adam may be John Adam what makes you think there are two fellows, a John A and an Adam. Are they both seen in directories during the same year ?? Do you have two distinct census records with different wives. The first person to show up is John Adam Scherrer in 1847. I believe he is the Adam that can be found who was born in 1829 and died in 1894. He is there off and on and there are even some years when the city directories do not have any Scherrer's spelled any way. Then there is an Adam. He show up more often, and it is hard to tell if he is the same man or a different one. He is not the one that you can consistently find married to a Margareth, all the way up to the 1930 census. There is one time when both are listed in the directory at the same time, both listed at the business and one at the business and the house. Then there is one time when they both are listed at the business but different houses, if I remember correctly. Those two are the ones I can start off with. I think that Adam's wife's name was Mary as she is listed at the same house, one year, as a seamstress. ************** Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? 3. Thanks Bob. I am thinking it might be best to search these indexes, if they have the 1930s. I think you may be right, they may require a town. The Town of Hempstead required that I give them the name of the town and that was my problem...I don't know what town. I'll check with NARA to see if they have indexes for 1930s. Thanks for reminding me about the town, this would have been another $22. 3. For WW1 and info for the Civil War. They came here around 1850, and some of the original lived through WW1 times. These are Hessians who were escaping the Duke of Hesse-Darmstardt who dragged men off the street to go to war against their will and that is why many came here; so I would suspect they might want to avoid being involved in the wars. I have been corresponding with a German man about our two families, which may have intermarried.
