    3. Liz, There are lots of reasons folks disappear from census records. If you haven't examined every single page of the area where you are SURE they were living, it's likely a transcription error or a census-taker error. Computer searches are likely to miss people under these circumstances. You'd be surprised at how mangled even simple names could be, either on the original forms or in the transcriptions of them. If other family members took in the children (for however short a time), they may be accidentally listed under the surname of the other head-of-household. Or they may just have moved from the area or been out of the country at the time the census was taken. If you haven't already tried doing so, try searching by first name and age range, and broaden the search to include other counties or even other states. I tend to find more people using this method. You could also check www.ellisisland.org to see if they show up as returning to the US in this timeframe. Many US citizens show up in the Ellis Island records when they returned from travels abroad. Finally, just to show you anything can happen ... My folks were renting an apartment in the 1960s in the upstairs of a woman's house. It was an "illegal" rental, and the owner asked them not to come to the door when the 1960 census taker came around. So, my folks will not show up anywhere on that census. Best of luck, Laura

    2. On Ancestry.com, go to US Federal Census year 1910. This is all below the name search section of the page. For some years they list descriptions of is covered within each borough. Look for children's homes and orphanages. Once you get to the site, use the search for box below that to add your ancesors' names. 3. Hi Everyone, I've been trying to find my great grandfather's children in census records for 1910 and 1920. All of the children appear in the 1900 census, but something happened between 1900 and 1910. My great grandmother shows up in 1910 married to someone else (and it says they'd been married for 6 yrs.) with one child (apparently from this new marriage). Her other two children, who would only be 10 and 12, are not with her, and I've tried searching under their names in the census and I find nothing. My great grandfather had an additional five children from his first marriage and they are nowhere to be found in the 1910 and 1920 census. I've also tried looking up each of their names and nothing...Could they have been sent to an orphanage? If this is the case, are there lists of orphans for Suffolk, Nassau and NYC (possibly the Bronx) that I could search? What other explanation could there be for this disappearance? Does anyone have any ideas of what else I might be able to do to find these children? 1. Re: [NYNEWYOR] newspaper search
    2. The first place anyone should check is the 1880 federal census. Women and children are named, and access is free. Next, try the NYTimes archives...if it was for rich folks, my ancestors would not have been in there. Also, search the 1910 census as it give the exact month and year of birth of each person enumerated. If you don't have access to Ancestry.com, find a local library that subscribes to it. You may have to do some legwork to ascertain which common Irish name in a newspaper is yours anyway. I was just on the NARA website last night and noticed they are in the process of relocating those records to the various local NARA facilities. These records were closed to the public in DC as of August 11. For those people looking for New Yorkers in the Civil War records in RG 110, they "should" be available at the Northeast Region NARA in Manhattan at the end of December. -- Laura

    1. [NYNEWYOR] Civil War RG 110
    2. Laura H. Congleton
    3. In a recent post I suggested going to NARA in DC to examine items from Record Group 110. -- Laura

    1. [NYNEWYOR] "Irish Relatives and Friends" at Ancestry.com
    2. This is a great place to find leads to your Irish ancestors' whereabouts. Also note the addresses of folks who posted; this may offer your ancestor's address in a non census year! Barb N of NYC "Irish Relatives and Friends" About this book Source: Original data: DeGrazia, Laura Murphy. Irish Relatives and Friends. Baltimore, MD, USA: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2001. Description: The Irish-American, a weekly newspaper published in New York City for the edification of the Irish immigrant population, began publication in August 1849, at the height of the great exodus from Ireland. Besides news items of interest to the Irish community, the paper ran a popular classified section for people seeking information on relatives and friends who had recently taken up residence in the U.S. These classified ads appeared in a column entitled "Information Wanted," and because of their genealogical value they have been transcribed in their entirety for this publication. The ads are of particular importance to the genealogist because they usually indicate the Irish county, townland, or parish from which an immigrant came, and virtually all Irish genealogical research is based on the identification of these jurisdictions. In addition to naming former places of residence in Ireland, the ads often name places of residence in the U.S., provide names and relationships of family members, give dates of departure from Ireland and arrival in the U.S., indicate ships' names, and sometimes specify ages and occupations. To help the researcher use this data efficiently, the compilers have assembled five separate indexes: Personal Names, Irish Place Names, United States Place Names, Other Places, and New York City Streets. Altogether, some 8,500 names appear in the Personal Names index alone; and there are references to several thousand place names.
