    3. I have 2 burials in Evergreen that have me baffled. I have the deed, 2 burials in Evergreen, Pathway section. Went there and everyone there looked at me funny. Pathway apparently was an indigent burial ground, has been abandoned for at least 90 years and yet here I stood with a deed. They were very nice there, caretaker looked up the plots and walked me to where they *approximately* would be. Most stones (of the few there were in this section) are lost. So, I have looked through the site and find nothing... caretaker there told me to call the historian for the cemetery. I find no such person to contact. I called the cemetery 2x and they also said *call the historian*. The interesting thing about my dead there...one dies in June 1865 and was reintered 1872, the other (wife) died 1869 and was re-intered in the same plot in 1877. Makes no sense, why not move both at the same time, as they were both dead by the time the 1st was moved. And no apparently they were not pauper graves as I have the deed in hand and the receipt (wouldn't you know it, with no notation of payee, just that it was *cash*) Help!! please. Gabriele

    3. And the cemetery opened in 1851- I had people who were buried there and then moved to other cemeteries- it is common to do that. In The GreenWood, one of my families that is buried there only has one headstone and tons of people. And it is the most expensive one to get the buriel records from. Where did they reside at the time of their passing? I would bet that they were originally buried in another cemetery/churchyard initially. According to Carolee Inskeep's Book, "The Graveyard Shift", Evergreen received thousands of re-interments from burial grounds in Manhattan, which were being phased out so the land they stood on would be available for redevelopment for other uses. 3. I am glad this topic came up. I have been looking at Lutheran Cemetery in Queens, where my gr-grandfather is buried and St. Raymond's in the Bronx for my gr-grandmother and I saw these fees for "genealogy research" for Lutheran Cemetery and then for St. Raymond's there were prices for "genealogy research" too. Excuse my ignorance on this subject, but I have a question. If I request information about my family (where the gravesite is located, funeral home, etc.) I have to pay for this? I understand if I want a document with this information, but just verbal information about my own family, especially since you must know the date of death and/or interment? I have searched the L. I. National Cemetery, which is great because at the entrance there is an office with a computer and you can look up the gravesite. This too is a huge cemetery and requires transportation to get from one end to the other. I have also searched East Hillside Cemetery in Nassau County (it borders Glen Cove), a small cemetery, only 5,000. The person in charge of this cemetery, "Bear" was so helpful. I called asking information and initially, he told me that my gr-grandparents were buried there, but something wasn't clear with the records and he couldn't tell me where they were buried, but he told me when they died, when they were born, the funeral info, whether there was an obit. and the other gravesites that belong to the family and who are buried there. He also offered to meet me at the cemetery and help me look. I went out there once with very little time and couldn't find the gravesite (it was late and started getting dark, and I had limited time so I didn't call Bear). About a month later, back in SC, I got a call from Bear and he gave me the exact gravesite information with landmarks, who was buried there, the connections with the other gravesites that belonged to the family. All this and free. He certainly went above and beyond his duties, and based on these last few e-mails, I am even more grateful to this generous man. Is there not a way for family to search or receive this information at Lutheran or St. Raymond's without paying so much money? It would seem that since Calvary Cemetery has over 5 million people buried and they charge so much for info, they should be able to set up a computer system for relatives to find their loved ones. 2. I was surpirsed today when I learned that Calvary Cemetery's prices for interment lists increased since I last ordered any. The charge is $60. for the first name, and $5. each for each additional name. Some of those big Irish families have ten in one grave. So, folks if you plan to purchase any, the Archdiocese of New York may raises prices again, any time. In my research, interment lists are invaluable. There is no equivalent. They provide the deceased's name, date of burial, and place of birth. Often an unfamiliar name will guide you to other family surnames. At smaller cemeteries you may acquire the cause of death, parents'names, name of purchaser, and even family addresses. Especially for those who live out of the NYC metro area, let me clarify that Calvary Cemetery is called "the largest in the USA," but I'm unsure if that refers to the acreage or the fact that 5 million people were buried there. Five million! They may have a dozen funerals schedule for one morning. Perhaps if family researchers understand this, you'll be more patient and understanding of this very busy staff. Calvary is also a complex cemetery to navigate. Some major thouroughfares dissect the grounds, and make traveling by car necessary to traverse from one section to another. For more information about Calvary Cemetery, this is a helpful article: http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=554 Remember, Calvary Cemetery records are searched with an exact death date. That is how their filing system is arranged, and all look ups are manually executed, often requiring researching 2- 4 different sources. I hope this is helpful, because it is one unique place. @MizScarlettNY:9.4.08 ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. 2. The Catholics of New York State have produced their full proportion of persons of distinction in the professions, commercial, political, and social life. Of the ninety-seven justices who now sit in the Supreme Court seventeen are of the Catholic faith. Among the justices of the lower courts are many Catholics. Since 1880 three mayors of New York City (Messrs. Grace, Grant, and Gilroy) have been Catholics. Francis Kernan was United States Senator for New York from 1876-82. Denis O'Brien closed a distinguished career as Judge of the Court of Appeals, the court of lest resort, by his retirement for age in 1908 after a continuous service of eighteen years. The first Catholic Justice of the Supreme Court was John R. Brady, elected in 1859, and loyal sons of the Church have been on that bench ever since. http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:Mwk48jbzjekJ:www.newadvent.org/cathen/1102 9a.htm+Judge+John+R.+Brady+NYC&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=49&gl=us&ie=UTF-8 ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go.
