    2. Jim Garrity
    3. "Researching Genealogical Resources in Ireland Long-distance" Sunday, September 28th, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Manhattan, NY In their only New York City-area appearance in 2008, two internationally-acclaimed experts on genealogical research in Ireland - Dr. William Roulston, Research Director of Ulster Historical Foundation in Belfast, and Dr. Brian Trainor, the Foundation's retired Research Director and the former Director of the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland - will present an information-packed afternoon on researching genealogical resources in Ireland long-distance. The seminar is open to members of the New York Irish History Roundtable and the public. Drs. Roulston and Trainor will give four lectures that focus on genealogical resources in a variety of repositories in the thirty-two counties of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, including many of the lesser-known resources. The afternoon will begin with a general introductory lecture, followed by specialized talks. The lectures are "Introduction to Irish and Scots-Irish Family History Research," "The Three Cs: Church Registers, Census Records and Civil Registration Records," "Gravestone Inscriptions," and "Not Always at the Bottom of the Pile." Time will be allotted for questions after each lecture. The seminar will take place on Sunday, September 28th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., in the McNally Amphitheatre of Fordham Law School at Lincoln Center, located at 140 W. 62nd Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues. 2. PROF. LOU BARSI
    3. At various times, I taught History, Political Science, and Psychology (General and Abnormal). Most recently, I taught Graduate students, primarily Doctoral students. I taught the History of Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, and Guided Doctoral Students in Dissertation Research. I was Dean of Students for about 20 years. I've published widely and have served on several National Committees. I've liked everything I have done, but especially training new Doctoral students. Then, I had two strokes. Early Retirement. My Neurologist suggested that I pursue genealogy because she knew that I was trying to uncover my mother's family history. It was a good suggestion, and I am confident that I've uncovered her mother, Mary Remak. I have discovered the name of her father (John Remak), but it's a relatively common Hungarian name in New Jersey where I grew up, and I hope to make progress on identifying who, specifically, he was. I really enjoy genealogy and have made a number of good friends. I have the use of one arm, have vision problems, take about 20 pills a day, and am confined to a wheel chair. I feel fortunate because I have several good friends, and I'm making progress. That's the short version . 3. Sue, I love you Dear Heart, but the Constitution of these United States is not...'Genealogy" and inappropriate on a genealogy list. But, since you feel so strongly about this perhaps this sort of post from you could go on a Political list or a chat list. We who are deeply into genealogy and searching for our breaks in the walls we have.... would not have to hear comments from others who are not so nice about their feelings. Then you could devote strictly genealogy queries to this list. How does that sound? I am sure you could handle a few more lists, Me..... I'm on about 20, My favorite one is about food and wine.....Big hugs, Claudia -----Original Message----- From: nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nynewyor-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Sue Maxwell Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 3:02 PM To: nynewyor@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYNEWYOR] Happy Constitution Day Are we having a debate? I don't think so. I think that it is obvious that the Constitution and what the men who started this country did have a lot to do with genealogy-- and some of us can trace our lineage back to those men. I was totally overwhelmed, excited, and felt a keen responsibility when I found that one of my lines goes back to them. They have a genealogy, too, and I think we might learn much from their lives and their descendants and ancestors about character, sacrifice, etc, as well as from our brave ancestors who came here to live in freedom. Despite all of our problems, America is still the best place to live, and we genealogists are contributing to an understanding of history by doing ours and creating a sense of family, which we are fast losing as a nation. I say three cheers for all that take the time to do this very important work. Some may think we are crazy, but they don't know what an amazing experience it is! 1. [NYNEWYOR] CAPITALIZATION
    2. Some human, who no one can identify, made up that stupid "rule" that online communication in CAPS denotes anger, not passion, emphasis, or writing dramatic dialogue, etc., etc, etc. [She writes in 12 font bold, due to poor vision.] Who was this Emily Post of conversing online? No one knows, but we are all supposed to adhere to it? How ridiculous! Unless a specific list requires it, what's the difference? What about those who write offline in all capital letters? Perhaps we should send them off for Palmer penmanship lessons. [Opps! That may be construed by readers as "age discrimination."] Such guffaws and online *insulted* folks over caps? What a joke. Reminder to the Newbies: Anyone can write to anyone OFFLIST [She says, for emphasis.], not admonish them in front of an audience. Miss Manners would surely gauge such intentional maltreatment of others as rude. [Should she capitalize the "r"? Hmmm.] Genealogy lists recommend capitalizing surnames to distinguish them from the rest of the text. This way readers can visually scan an email then decide if it is worth reading. Now, that makes sense. If you have poor vision, do whatever makes you comfortable, without apologies, unless the list specifies otherwise. I bet the median age of members of this list is over 50 anyway. 3. I think we can agree to disagree- ok? If I was researching the founding father's lives, whom I am related to, the Constitution and their involvement in its development would certainly be part of my historical setting for their lives. I guess because I am writing a book to be published ( not a genealogy style book with only descendancy in it), I have come to see how the history of the times is connected with the people. 3. Emails can be notoriously misunderstood, due to lack of personal contact. I kind of thought the Professors "tut tut" was a cute remark and yet some took it the other way; and now we all understand each other better. Some genealogists are interested in records only and some like to add historical context and information to help bring the person alive. In this way, anything like the Constitution, the founding fathers, the history of countries, the culture of our country, etc, relates to genealogy. There is hardly a subject I can think of that really doesn't fit into genealogy- that is why I like it- it involves you in so much information, which fits me well. I love being a detective. I am happy to live in a country where we are free to do it. I was puzzled about why I could find my Scherrer ancestors in the city directories starting in 1847, but could not find them on one record until after 1860- reading a bit of German history, I discovered that they left during a revolution, and had the mind set of avoiding war ( the Civil War)- none of them became naturalized citizens until after the war and they kept a low profile. It was an lightbulb experience I had as I started trying to study the entire family. I feel that we are strengthening our families and thus our nation and its Constitution by doing family history work. I know it has changed my life so much that I will never be the same. I love all of the lists I am on, but have a bit project I have to get onto. I never knew, until I got on lists, that there was so much online info, as I am lucky to live near two outstanding libraries. God bless this country, and our brave ancestors whom we grow to love when we study their lives and sacrifices- and New York was certainly an important part of the founding of and growth of this country. Sue

    3. Are we having a debate? Sue
