For several years we have been building a longitudinal database of people who lived in New York City and Chicago in 1920, trying to trace them back to the 1900 census manuscripts. The purpose is to study systematically people's residential and occupational mobility. We started with samples of several thousand, and made the job considerably harder by including both men and women. As we near the limit of our own ability to find people, we are soliciting help from amateur and professional genealogists whose methods we have adopted. This week we launched the Mumford Genealogy Challenge, through which people can log onto a web page, select a case, download all of the information we have about the case (including 1920 census data, and often data from marriage and birth certificates), and submit their findings. We have even commissioned Mumford Genealogy Challenge mugs for the "winners," and people with confirmed finds will have their names listed on the winners page along with links to their own web page, if they have one.
