He has requested we computerize the County’s records regarding the discharge records for veterans. As you may or may not know, an honorable discharged veteran may supply the County Clerk with a copy of his DD-214 or discharge papers. It is not required but it is a good idea, since many vets has misplaced or lost their discharge papers. This is also very valuable research tool. These important papers are needed on order to receive medical benefits or burial benefits or other benefits that a veteran may be entitled to. A few years ago, we had also computerized the Nassau County Discharge Records but the County Clerk has resisted making them available to the public but once we get the Suffolk County Discharge Records up, she may be convinced to do so. The law is very clear that these are public records. We need volunteers to do this project. It is very similar to other projects we have done. We will again be working in Excel or Works and using typewritten records. If you would like to give the veterans a helping hand, please get in touch with me and we will mail a copy of the records to you. These copies will not have to be returned. Once you have completed your file, they can be destroyed. I hope to hear from as many of you as possible. This will make the project a lot easier and get finished quicker.
