    1. immigrant arrival prior to ellis island?
    2. On 2/25/05 (10:13:27 AM MST), in a posting to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Sally Schilling (sally_schilling@earthlink.net) asked: "Can someone direct me to where I could find information about where German immigrants would have arrived in about circa 1883? The family finally settled in New Jersey ... " Immediately before Ellis Island was the 'Barge' and prior to that was Castle Garden. From August 1, 1855 to April 1890, Castle Garden served as the entry point for New York City and was America's first immigrant receiving station. For a history of Castle Garden, as well as the Barge that was in the 2-year interim period between Castle Garden and Ellis Island, please go to: http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/ImmNat/ Also, if you scroll down the page, you'll find a LINK to "Resources for Finding New York Passenger Lists, 1847-1897 (the Unindexed Years), Castle Garden Passenger Lists". Again, thank you Nancy Lutz (NancyL916@AOL.com) for the wonderful Brooklyn Pages and all the information that they hold. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan
