On 5/9/05 (2:00:43 PM MDT), as part of a posting to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Sally Schilling (sally_schilling@earthlink.net) asked, "My Great Grandfather Frank Schreiber died in 1899 ... according to his death certificate that I received from the Town of Hempstead, he is buried in Springfield Cemetery... I have yet not been able to locate this cemetery ... Anyone have a clue where this cemetery might be?" Springfield Cemetery is in what is now the neighborhood of Springfield Gardens in what had been the Town of Jamaica, Queens County. According to William Applebie Eardeley, "Cemetery at Springfield, Town of Jamaica, Queens County, Long Island, New York : 1735 or 1760 to 1909 : 1185 stones : this cemetery is on Sprinfield Avenue, not farm from Lords Creamery : it is well kept and still used : there are a number of stones that are illegible, besides a number of rough stones, used to mark graves : it is about one mile from the Trolley line to Freeport, Long Island, New York : this cemetery is a large one & its location is well known." For a listing of the headstones (there are many Hendricksons but no Schreibers), please go to (you'll need to copy and paste the entire URL, beginning with "freepages" and ending with ".htm"): freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/newyork/springfield_cem.htm also: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/newyork/springfield_cem2.htm I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. You said in your other message that you have notes on some headstones that were in the cemetery....where might I get these, or were they just specific to your family name? I'm researching the Wood family that lived in the Hempstead area. I recognize many of the names that you are researching and of course come upon them a lot during my research. So far I've found no connection to Abrams, but there was a Hendrickson (Eliza - b. 1827) who married into the Valentine line of my family. Are you originally from Long Island? My husband and I moved from Long Island about 6 years ago to Virginia. All of our family is still on the Island, so when I go back to visit a few times a year I make plans to do some genealogy work! The husband is probably Jno. or John. I have not found them in any other census. The history of this family is very murky, although it is known there were at least two other children: Cynthia who married a Chung Yick in Providence, RI ca 1900, and Charles Joseph. A newspaper article from Providence ca Feb. 1900 has Cynthia's son from her first marriage killed in a fire in the home. Sarah Lumb was identified as being there when the fire began. However, none of these people is found in any 1900 census. A family journal has Cynthia (and probably her family) going to China later in 1900, and they may have remained there, as there is no further information on her or any in her family. Charles Joseph Lumb is my husband's grandfather. He married Catherine McGarry ca 1897, and is probably the one living child referred to by Sarah in the 1910 census. (No idea what happened to son George). Sarah's husband John is believed to have gone to Cuba ca 1900, and may have remained there, as he is not found in any later census. Some in the family believe he may have had Chinese/Cuban background; Cynthia indicated her father was Chinese on her marriage application. My present main goal is to find Sarah's death date and hopefully obtain a death certificate. Thanks for all help.

Is it gone now? I know the cemetery at St. John's Methodist Church, but this one is different, isn't it?" For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Elmont Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Elmont Public Library 1735 Hempstead Turnpike Elmont, NY 11003-1896 Tel: 516/354-5280 Fax: 516/354-3276 eMail: jschoen@epl.lib.ny.us http://www.nassaulibrary.org/elmont/ The pertinent geography: Once called Foster's Meadow, and home to the Belmont Race Track, Elmont is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau/NYC (Queens County) line. There are 36 hamlets and 22 villages (municipal corporations) all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Hamlet of Elmont in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Bellerose Terrace, the Village of Floral Park, the Village of South Floral Park and the Village of Stewart Manor; on the east by the Hamlet of Franklin Square; on the south by the Hamlet of North Valley Stream; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau/Queens County line). And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Elmont has a different border than does the "Elmont, NY 11003" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an Elmont mailing address and not be in Elmont and a place can be in Elmont and have other than an Elmont mailing address). .......................................acres .....Hamlet of Elmont.........2,357 .....Elmont, NY 11003........2,791 Thus, a bit more than about 1 in 7 places that have an Elmont mailing address are not in the Hamlet of Elmont (these places are in the Hamlet of Franklin Square). At the same time, there are places in Elmont with other than an Elmont, NY mailing address (these places have a Valley Stream, NY mailing address). For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Elmont in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.
