Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lRB.2ACE/887.1 Message Board Post: On 6/10/05 (1:57:25 PM MDT), in a posting to the Nassau County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Yvonne Reuter (greuter@wi.rr.com) asked, "Can anyone please advice me where to write to for a death certificate from 1972, Lynbrook NY? Is there a website? Address? I'm looking for the death certificate of my Uncle Albert Forstrom who died in Lynbrook Ny, March 1972." Death certificates are handled by the city, town and some villages in which the death occurred, and this is not necessarily the municipality in which the person was residing immediately prior to death, especially if the death occurred in a hospital. If the death actually occurred in the Village of Lynbrook, then you'd want to check first with the Village Clerk of the Village of Lynbrook: Village Clerk Village of Lynbrook Lynbrook Village Hall 1 Columbus Drive Lynbrook, NY 11563 Tel: 516/599-8300 Fax: 516/887-8148 eMail: dsmollett@lynbrookvillage.com http://www.lynbrookvillage.com/index.shtml The pertinent geography: Alternatively know as Five Corners and Bloomfield, the area became known as Pearsalls Corners (to honor general store owner Wright Pearsalls), Lynbrook -- or Brooklyn spelled inside-out -- is a village (incorporated in 1911) in the central part of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County. There are 22 villages (municipal corporations) and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Village of Lynbrook is bordered on the north by the Village of Malverne and the Hamlet of North Lynbrook; on the east by the Hamlet of Lakeview and the Village of Rockville Centre; on the south by the Village of East Rockaway and the Hamlet of Hewlett; and, on the west by the Village of Valley Stream. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Lynbrook has a different border than does the "Lynbrook, NY 11563" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Lynbrook mailing address and not be in Lynbrook and a place can be in Lynbrook and have other than a Lynbrook mailing address). ....................................acres ..Village of Lynbrook.......1,290 ..Lynbrook, NY 11563.....1,549 Thus, about one of every 7 places that have a Lynbrook mailing address are not in the Village of Lynbrook. (Most of these places that have a Lynbrook mailing address but are not in the Village of Lynbrook are in the Hamlet of North Lynbrook and the Hamlet of Hewlett. Meanwhile there are places in the Village of Lynbrook that have a Rockville Centre mailing address.) For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Lynbrook (incorporated in 1911) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. On 6/10/05 9:16:05 AM MDT), in a posting to the Queens County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYQUEENS-L@rootsweb.com, Beth Bond (deliaesther@att.net) asked, "I am looking for any information I can find on my Walter J. Bond. I do have his information from census records in Queens from 1850-1880. Walter was born in England about 1833. He may or may not be a Walter Bond who came to N.Y. as a child in 1837. In the 1850 census of Hempstead, Queens he was living with Zachary Story and his family. In 1860 he was listed as head of his own household and he was a farmer. He had married by then to Louisa Jackson who was apparently born in New York. I fdo not have the date or place of their marriage. I do not yet have either Walter or Louisa'a parents. In the 1880 census Walter's occupation is said to be House carpenter. he and Louisa had the following children: William, Robert A.(my 2nd great-grandfather), Millard Fillmore, Annie E., Frankin Joseph, John B., Seaman Lewis and Clara E. Bond. We all know how difficult it is not to have the 1890 census! Walter has died by 1900, as Louisa is listed as a widow in the 1900 Census of New York, living in Nassau County with one of her sons. I have more on their children. I would like more information on Walter." First, all of Nassau County was part of Queens County until January 1, 1899, when the eastern three-quarters of Queens County (the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead, excluding the Rockaway peninsula, and Oyster Bay) seceded and formed Nassau County. There is the Town of Hempstead = 22,621 acres The pertinent geography: Hempstead is a village (incorporated in 1853) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County. As you can see from the above, about 12.5% of the places that have a "Hempstead" mailing address are not in the Village of Hempstead. (Portions of the Hamlets of East Garden City and South Hempstead have Hempstead, NY mailing addresses.) For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier editions of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Hempstead (incorporated in 1853) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). Does anyone have information about the Catholic churches in that area around that time period?" First, Port Jefferson then a hamlet and now a village, has always been in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk, not Nassau, County. Second, because this event occurred prior to Port Jefferson becoming a village and even prior to the NYS law of 1881 that required municipalities to main such records, the record MAY be at the Town Clerk for the Town of Brookhaven: Town Clerk Town of Brookhaven Brookhaven Town Hall One Independence Hill Farmingville, NY 11738 Tel: 631/451-9101 Fax: 631/451-9264 eMail: TOWNCLERK@BROOKHAVEN.ORG http://www.brookhaven.org/departments/town_clerk.asp?dept_id=15&page_id=15 Third, for questions such as yours about what Roman Catholic Church was in the area circa the 1857/58, you may want to contact the Port Jefferson Free Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Port Jefferson Free Library 100 Thompson Street Port Jefferson, NY 11777 Tel: 631/473-0022 Fax: 631/???-???? eMail: ?????? http://pjfl.suffolk.lib.ny.us/ The pertinent geography: The Village of Port Jefferson (incorporated in 1963) is in the northwest part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north-central part of Suffolk County. Those places that have a "Port Jefferson, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Port Jefferson are in the Village of Belle Terre; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Port Jefferson with a "Mount Sinai, NY 11766" or a "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" mailing address.
