Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/892.2 Message Board Post: You may have to check the Jamaica Town Records also, if you haven't done so. Perhaps a third of Fosters Meadow was within Jamaica (current Rosedale, part of Springfield, Laurelton and Cambria Heights) and the remainder constitutes part of Valley Stream and part of Elmont, generally south of the Hempstead Turnpike. A William Foster had a parcel of land in the 1680s at Fosters Meadow east of the Fosters River (probably now the creek west of Rosedale) in the bounds of Jamaica. A William Foster also had meadow land along the Haw Tree Path adjoining the land of Henry Foster's children in Jamaica. This apparently was somewhere along the southerly end of Hawtree Creek Road in what is probably now JFK Airport land just to the east of Old Howard Beach William Foster was a patentee of Jamaica and he apparently had early ties to Gravesend in Kings County. There are 2 different names circa 1680s for spouse of William - Jane and Ann. Were there 2 men named William Foster? If you follow Walter's advice, the L.I. Studies Institute should have the Town Records for Jamaica.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/892.1 Message Board Post: On 6/21/05 (10:42:19 AM MDT), in a posting to the Nassau County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewaeyd' to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Peter Carrell (pcar2@comcast.net) asked, "Looking for clues as to the English origins of Thomas and his brother, Christopher Foster, who obtained a patent for Foster's Meadows, Hempstead. Local histories place Thomas as arriving on a Dutch frigate in 1637 settling in Bayside. Christopher was probably the one who was also resident of Southampton who was a farmer in Ewell, Surrey, England and arrived on the Abigail to Lynn, MA 1635. But no good data exist for his parents (albeit many confusing genealogies have been posted without good documentation). Thomas' cousin was Henry son of John Foster Sr. d. 10 Mar 1686/7 Jamaica according to his will. But who was William, listed as friend? Was John Sr. the one from South Haven, CT and also listed in East Hampton?" For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Long Island Studies Institute as well as the Elmont Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Long Island Studies Institute West Campus Library Hofstra University 619 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, NY 11549-4575 Tel: 516/463-6411 Fax 516/463-6441 eMail: lisi@hofstra.edu http://www.hofstra.edu/Libraries/WestCampus/SpecialCollections/sc_lisi_main.cfm Elmont Public Library 1735 Hempstead Turnpike Elmont, NY 11003-1896 Tel: 516/354-5280 Fax: 516/354-3276 eMail: jschoen@epl.lib.ny.us http://www.nassaulibrary.org/elmont/ The pertinent geography: Once called Foster's Meadow, and home to the Belmont Race Track, Elmont is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau/NYC (Queens County) line. There are 36 hamlets and 22 villages (municipal corporations) all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Hamlet of Elmont in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Bellerose Terrace, the Village of Floral Park, the Village of South Floral Park and the Village of Stewart Manor; on the east by the Hamlet of Franklin Square; on the south by the Hamlet of North Valley Stream; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau/Queens County line). And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Elmont has a different border than does the "Elmont, NY 11003" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an Elmont mailing address and not be in Elmont and a place can be in Elmont and have other than an Elmont mailing address). .......................................acres .....Hamlet of Elmont.........2,357 .....Elmont, NY 11003........2,791 Thus, a bit more than about 1 in 7 places that have an Elmont mailing address are not in the Hamlet of Elmont (these places are in the Hamlet of Franklin Square). At the same time, there are places in Elmont with other than an Elmont, NY mailing address (these places have a Valley Stream, NY mailing address). For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Elmont in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lRB.2ACE/882.3 Message Board Post: Hi Janet My mom and I had the best luck when we planned a trip to Albany to the State Archives. They have indexes there for New York except the 5 boroughs. I just went to their website to attach the information and read that the indexes are now also available in the National Archives, New York City. Maybe someone on the New York City message board can confirm. Mom and I took our list of family and looked up everyone we could find. We were very surprised to find Nassau Co people in Suffolk Co. A lot were not in the indexes, leading us to search the boroughs at our LDS library. Found alot in the boroughs. So even though my people are lived thier whole lives and are buried in Nassau Co we have found their vital records in other counties. The best way is to try and get to the indexes and avoid the Town Hall. Once you find your people in the index write to Albany for the record, cost the same, but be willing to wait up to a year. If you find them in the boroughs that is a different addr! ess. Some of the Town Hall's in Nassau Co we found disorganized and I would not trust them with my money, (having left plenty there with nothing to show, and eventually getting the records from Albany). The following is from this website, you might want to check it out. http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/genealogy/vitrec.htm "Indexes to the Vital Records of New York State (except New York City) Microfiche copies of the Indexes to the vital records that are currently available to the public contain the following information: name, place, date, and certificate number. The Indexes are currently available upstate only at the New York State Archives, 11th Floor, Cultural Education Center, Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY 12230, 518-474-8955; and Rochester Public Library, 115 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14604, 716-428-8440. Indexes at the State Archives in Albany can be used from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The Department of Health's Bureau of Vital Records no longer provides access to the microfiche Indexes by appointment. The National Archives and Records Administration's Northeast Region office in New York City (201 Varick Street, New York, NY 10014-4811, 212-401-1620) also has the Indexes. " Good luck with your research. Kathleen
