    2. On 8/17/05 (7:18:53 AM MDT), as part of a posting to NY-LONGISLAND-L@rootsweb.com, Maggie (Maggie.Spetnagel@gwl.com) asked, "I have a William J. O'Connor born September 1875 who died between 1935-1945 while living at 152 Park Avenue in Rockville Centre. Are there any death indexes for Nassau County for that period? Where might I look for an obit index for that period? This man raised my grandfather after my great grandparents both died. I know he is a relative, but don't know how. Of course everyone who might know is now dead. Why do we come to genealogy so late in life?!? I would appreciate any help." For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Rockville Centre (incorporated in 1893) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). 1. 1990 HOBART CARR OBIT PLEASE
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/908.1 Message Board Post: On 7/31/05 (10:59:48 AM MDT), in a posting to the Nassau County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Fran Eichler (fran-eichler@mchsi.com) asked, "Hobart Carr passed away on 3/25/1990. The SSDI lists his last residence as Garden City. Would someone be kind enough to find his obit for me." For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Garden City Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Garden City Public Library 60 Seventh Street Garden City, NY 11530 Tel: 516/742-8405 Fax: 516/???-???? eMail: gcpljra@lilrc.org http://www.nassaulibrary.org/gardenc/ Village Clerk Village of Garden City Garden City Village Hall 351 Stewart Avenue Garden City, New York 11530 Tel: 516/465-4053 Fax: 516/???-???? eMail: ?????? http://www.gardencityny.net/gcvillage.htm Garden City is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with a Garden City mailing address are in some other community than the village whose name is part of their mailing address. The pertinent geography: Garden City is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the north-center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the center of Nassau County, along the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line. There are 22 villages (municipal corporations) and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Village of Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the North Hempstead/Hempstead town line (the Village of New Hyde Park, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park, the Village of Mineola and the Hamlet of Carle Place, all in the Town of North Hempstead); on the east by the Hamlet of East Garden City; on the south by the Village of Hempstead, the Hamlet of West Hempstead, the Hamlet of Hamlet of Garden City South and the Hamlet of Franklin Square; and, on the west by the Village of Stewart Manor and the Village of New Hyde Park. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Garden City has a different border than does the "Garden City, NY 11530" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Garden City mailing address and not be in the Village of Garden City and a place can be in the Village of Garden City and have other than a Garden City mailing address). ...........................................acres ....Village of Garden City.......3,414* ....Garden City, NY 11530.....4,859 * Includes 1 acre of the Village of Garden City that's in the Town of Hempstead. As you can see from the above, about 30% of the places that have a "Garden City" mailing address are not in the Village of Garden City. Most of these places that have a "Garden City" address that are not in the Village of Garden City are in the Hamlet of East Garden City, the Hamlet of Garden City South, the Hamlet of Franklin Square and in the Village of Stewart Manor. Simultaneously, there are places in the Village of Garden City that have a "Mineola, NY" mailing address. (The Nassau County county seat is in that part of the Village of Garden City that has a "Mineola, NY" mailing address.) For those who have their copy of the 2004 or earlier editions of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Garden City (incorporated in 1919) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    3. Hi Kathy: I'm sorry no one has been able to help you. First, a death way out in Quogue will most likely not make a Brooklyn, Nassau, or NYC newspaper unless the person had connections here. Second, the most likely, widely distributed paper for this would probably be NEWSDAY or one of the very local papers out in Southampton Town (where Quogue and Good Ground/Hampton Bays is). For Hampton Bays, the paper was the Hampton Chronicle which I believe was absorbed by the Southampton Press. So, that's probably the local paper you would want to take a look at. A 1994 obit would not be online, it would require a library look up as I believe that even Newsday's archives don't begin until 1997/8 or so. See www.newsday.com and http://www.southamptonpress.com/ Keep in mind that this is 90 miles east of NYC and Brooklyn. It's not close and there may not be a list member who actually lives in the area to visit one of those local libraries and look in the Southampton Press for you. But, you can rephrase your request to ask that someone, anyone on LI, do a lookup for you in Newsday. This specific request may get a better response. Give the full name, the date, etc. again. By the way, this query is on the Nassau County list and Quogue is in Suffolk County so you may want to post to both county lists if you haven't already. Someone living in Nassau most likely would not make a very hot, 180 mile round trip drive for you to access the Southampton Press. Someone in Suffolk County may be close enough to help you out. There is also the Suffolk Life newspaper. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=1776 and the Independent http://www.indyeastend.com/ If I were you, I would try to contact the Hampton Bays Public Library and ask them (soooo very sweetly) if they couldn't help you out. Being summer, they are less likely to be tied up with school children and parents hammering them for information for homework. It's worth a shot if you don't get a response from the Suffolk-L list. I've found them to be very nice and very helpful. Or, contact the newspapers directly. I know it's frustrating, but the geography is such that what you are looking for is a long way from Nassau County and NYC. Best regards. Nancy. 3. Good Ground Cemetery is in Hampton Bays, NY. It is the old name for Hampton Bays. It's right on Montauk Hwy just as you drive into town (going east), on the left behind the Methodist Church.
