I checked thru the baptisms and marriages but found nothing on your Bill and Madeline. I don't know if you are familiar with the area but Craft was a well known name there. Because I don't know where you live, I can't tell you where to search, You haven't given much information and it doesn't look like you have done much researching. I would suggest that you look at the earlier census records for your families in the Lawrence/Cedarhurst and Inwood areas. If you are in the NY area, go to the Mineola courthouse on Old Country Rd. and look up Craft and Vandewater wills. At the courthouse, you can also look up land records. If you go back before 1899, you will have to look in the courthouse on Hillside Ave/Sutphen Blv'd in Jamaica. Do you have birth death or marriage dates on anyone? Do you have any living relations who could give you any clues on where these people are buried? You need dates. From the census, you should have the approximate birth year on the three that you found also if they were born in NYand if their parents were born in NY. If you get the parents on Bill Craft, you will pick up a slew of cousins. You could look for Doris at Lawrence High School . If you have her, age you could make a stab at the year that she graduated. My address is [email protected]

The information I know. Bill and Madeline Craft were a young married couple living in Cedarhurst, according to the 1920 census, renting from Madeline's mother (Bertha Sargent). No children are listed for them on the census. From other sources, I believe, they had two children, William Jr. and Doris. I assume both children were born after 1920, and Doris could have married a Vandewater as early as the mid 1940's or 1950's, assuming she was born mid twenties. I am looking for descendents of either child, Bill Jr. or Doris.

Just thought everyone should be made aware there is a woman by the name of Doreen McKenna Powers ( [email protected] net )who is stealing the posts that come from the lists and posting them to a genealogy.com site as here own. I have notified both her and Genealogy.com but as of yet they have not taken down the site, even though she and they acknowledge that the posts are not hers!!
Can someone tell me whether the Fairchild & Sons Funeral Home (Garden City, L.I.) is still in Business, and if not if someone else is operating it? Thank you. Lin

I live on Udall Road, it is in West Islip, and after crossing Bayshore Road, turns into Udalls road. It is one of the oldest roads on Long Island. After crossing Bayshore Road it is part of Bayshore, but they have middle school at the end, that becomes part of Brentwood. Confusing, yes, oh well! I missed the thread, but if you need anything, let me know, maybe I could find it at the library. Terre

RED PEPPER Bertha HELD Throws it in Her Husband's Eyes-An then Tries to Murder Him Bad Marksmanship Saves His Life-A Sensation on Long Island (Special to the EAGLE.) Farmingdale, L.I. May 8, 1885. The inhabitants of this section of the island were furnished with a sensation this morning by Matthias HELD, a German, residing at Bethpage Junction, who charges his wife Bertha with having thrown red pepper in his eyes and with firing three shots at him while he stood sightless and in agony on the highway. Justice FITSELL has been asked to issue a warrant for the woman's arrest, and will do so as soon as HELD, who is suffering severely, can appear before him. The assault took place in front of Farmer BURTSELL'S residence, and HELD is being cared for there. He was formerly a dealer in salt hay at Breslau, L.I., and thus earned the sobriquet of "Salt Hay Pete." Five years ago he went to Germany to obtain a legacy of several thousand dollars which had been left to him by a relative. Returning after a few months absence, HELD met a widow, Mrs. Bertha BULLET, who had two children. After a short courtship, HELD and Mrs. BULLER were married. HELD did little, if any, work during he succeeding four years, and took to drinking spending the last of his fortune a few months ago. His wife and he have latterly had frequent quarrels and about three weeks ago he left his home and went to reside at Woodbury. His wife had him arrested for abandonment and non support, upon which charge Justice FITSELL committed him to jail in default of bonds to provide for his wife. He remained in jail only a few days, having furnished the required bonds, and then obtained employment at Woodbury. Wednesday night, so HELD says he was proceeding towards Bethpage from Woodbury, intending to effect a conciliation with his wife, when she met him. She greeted him with some angry words,a and without any warning, threw the pepper in his eyes and fired several shots, neither of which took effect, although one of them grazed his head. Farmer BURTSELL, who heard the shots, hastened to the spot. Mrs. HELD ran off on his approach and went home. It is feared that HELD will never fully recover his sight. Mrs. HELD refuses to make any statement. Transcribed for the Bklyn Info Pages http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~blkyn/Bklyn.Info.Page.html

I have a short History of Hicksville; hope this helps: http://users.rootsweb.com/~nynassa2/litowns.htm Linda [email protected] Nassau County History Jack Frosty wrote: Can anyone answer this question? Alas, I don't think much--if any--of old Hicksville exists any longer _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx ------ List Admin- [email protected] NY GenExchange: http://www.genexchange.org/state.cfm?state=ny US GenExchange: http://www.genexchange.org/us.cfm There are many links on the internet, but the BEST LINK is my link to JESUS CHRIST! --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Hi folks, just a headsup, the www.familysearch.org site has updated their IGI files, the site has been mostly down for the last few days, but seems to be working now... The names in the IGI are now linked together into families, (sorta) where possible, also LDS members can access OI data by a secure logon process, see the site for more details.. Brooklyn Standard Union July 7, 1931 News Articles L. I. FARMER AND SEAMAN DIE in WATERFRONT DUEL AFTER FIGHT OVER WOMAN Sailor, Ex-Convict, Found Clutching Knife--Other Two Blocks Away The bodies of an ex-convict two months out of Sing Sing and a Syosset farmer were found in the gutter two blocks from each other early today near the Brooklyn waterfront, just outside the border of Red Hook. One was dead with a bullet wound and the other of a knife wound. At 12:10 A.M., Detective Jacob BROOM of the Hamilton avenue station, answered a call that a man was lying in the gutter in front of 54 President street, and found the body of Oscar GONZALES, a Chilean seaman with a bad police record, former inmate of Sing Sing and also a drug addict. A stab in the groin had stained the ground about him with blood and he held a pocket knife clutched in his hand. SYOSSET FARMER DEAD A little later the Hamilton avenue station received another call to the effect that the body of a man was lying in the gutter before 29 Carroll street, and Detective Vincent GIORGANO of the homicide squad, went to the scene and found Thomas RUSSO, a farmer of Syosset, lying in a pool of blood. Dr. GAVEGAN of the Long Island College Hospital arrived on the scene and pronounced the man dead. It appeared he had bled to death from a stab wound in the eye and a bullet in his stomach. He held a cigarette in his hand. RUSSO was identified by his father and brother, whom he had been visiting over night at 548 Hicks street. He had come in from Syosset during the afternoon and last evening he and his father had called at a friend’s house between Van Brunt and Columbia streets on President street. There were several visitors there, and they were drinking red wine when GONZOLES, a stranger, had broken in on the party. At first he had been accepted quietly, but trouble had started when he became interested in one of the women present. RUSSO argued with him, words passed between them and they went outside into the street to fight the matter out. CAN’T FIND GUN Police think that in the course of the fight RUSSO shot Gonzales in the stomach, but not before he himself received a stab in the abdomen which resulted in his bleeding to death. There is a mystery, however, in the lack of any revolver with which the shooting might have been done. Nowhere on the scene was any firearm found. Lieut. David McCLUNN, of the Tenth Division detectives, who took charge of the investigation, has been unable to find anybody in the neighborhood who claims to have witnessed the murder or heard shots fired. Although the police have the record of the hasheesh smoking Chilean GONZALES, who lived at 23 Union street, they have no record for RUSSO, who was a widower and leaves five children. The police are today busy with an investigation and a number of detectives have been assigned to the case.
