    3. There are several mixed up genealogies about this family! Be careful. According to "Register of the Early Settlers of Kings County" by Teunis G. Bergen (NY 1881), p229-30, Christoffel Probasko, Jr. and Jan Probasco (brothers) both settled in NJ. Christoffel Jr. m. Catalina Schenck and settled on the Raritan (NJ) and Jan settled at Millstone NJ and signed his name Probasco. But, keep in mind this is just Bergen's account. You may want to reference this work for clues but also take it with a grain of salt... :) There has been considerable debate about the accuracy of this lineage. In NJ, I find: Calendar of New Jersey Wills, Vol. III 1751-1760 Calendar of New Jersey Wills Name: Jan Probasco Date: 21 Oct 1749 Location: Middlebush, Somerset Co. Name: Frederick Probasco Date: 15 Mar 1757 Location: Amwell Township, Hunterdon Co. (Bergen states this is the son of Jacob, below) Name: Jacob Probasco Date: 22 Dec 1752 Location: Somerset Co. (Another brother of Jan & Christoffel according to Bergen) I also find: PROBASCO, STOFFEL State: NJ Year: 1753 County: Somerset County Record Type: Township: Freeholder Page: 048 Database: NJ Early Census Index (According to Bergen, Christoffel Jeurianse Probasko (Sr., the father), signed his name "Stoffel Probasko." If this is his son, he may have signed the same way. But, there are other references that this could be the son of Jacob Probasco and Maria van Liew of Middlebush, NJ. He supposedly died 1776 or thereabouts (b. 1709). To confuse matters even further... there was a John Probasco who died in 1744 in Jamaica, will dated 27 Nov 1744. So, you have at least two John/Jan Probascos (one in NY and one in NJ) who were alive about the same time. So, you need to be careful as to who is who. :) If you feel you descend from the NJ Jan Probasco (d. 1749) you should probably pull the will to confirm any issue named. You could do the same for the John above who died in NY. There was also a second Christoffel during the period who remained on Long Island. This may be your Christoffel as well. I haven't found any date of death for this one. Hope this helps. Best regards. Nancy. 1. [NYNAS ] ZIP Code 11516
    2. On 10/31/02 (5:36:45 PM MST). ?????? ([email protected]) asked, "Can you tell me a little about zip code 11516, communities and borders. Iappreciate the information." ZIP Code 11516 covers the Village of Cedarhurst and parts of the Village of Lawrence and the Hamlet of Woodmere in the southwestern part of the Town of Hempstead. Cedarhurst is one of those communities on Long Island where the majority of the places with a Cedarhurst mailing address are not in Cedarhurst. The pertinent geography: Cedarhurst is a village (incorporated in 1910) in the southwestern part of the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County, adjacent to the Queens/Nassau County line. There are 22 villages and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) The Village of Cedarhurst is one of the upscale "5 Towns" (none of which are towns) that includes the Village of Lawrence (incorporated in 1897) and the Hamlets of Hewlett, Inwood and Woodmere. Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Village of Cedarhurst in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north and east by the Hamlet of Woodmere; on the south by the Village of Lawrence; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Inwood. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Cedarhurst has a different border than does the "Cedarhurst, NY 11516" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Cedarhurst mailing address and not be in Cedarhurst and a place can be in Cedarhurst and have other than have other than a Cedarhurst mailing address). ........................................acres .....Village of Cedarhurst......428 .....Cedarhurst, NY 11516....864 Thus, a bit more than half the paces with a "Cedarhurst, NY" mailing address are NOT in the Village of Cedarhurst. (These places that have a "Cedarhurst, NY" mailing address that are not in the Village of Cedarhurst are mostly in the Village of Lawrence and the Hamlet of Woodmere.) For those who have their copy of the 2001 LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Cedarhurst (incorporated in 1910) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    1. [NYNAS ] Great Neck land and property records
    2. On 10/29/02 (1:41:29 PM MST), Jim WARD ([email protected]) asked, "Please, is there a list member that can provide the correct name and address of the governmental body maintaining the land and property records for Great Neck during the period 1926 - 1980. Complicating your search is that Great Neck is one of those communities on Long Island where the majority of the places with a Great Neck mailing address are not in Great Neck. There are 9 villages and 4 hamlets that are all or partly within the "Great Neck, NY" postal zone. If the land and property records you seek is in one of the 9 villages, then contact the village clerk for that village; if the land and propert records you seek is in one of the 4 hamlets, then contact the town clerk for the Town of North Hempstead. The pertinent geography: Great Neck is a village (incorporated in 1921) in the northwestern part of the Town of North Hempstead. There are 30 villages and 18 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of North Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Great Neck in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Village of Kings Point; on the east by Hempstead Harbor; on the south by the Hamlet of Great Neck Gardens, the Villages of Great Neck Estates and Saddle Rock; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Saddle Rock Estates and the Village Kings Point. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Great Neck has a different border than does the "Great Neck, NY" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a Great Neck mailing address and not be in Great Neck). ....................................................acres .........Village of Great Neck..............866 .........Great Neck, NY...................6,022* * This includes the 4 postal stations (branches) that are part of the Great Neck Post Office: .........Great Neck, NY 11020...........1,405 .........Great Neck, NY 11021...........1,314 .........Great Neck, NY 11023...........1,098 .........Great Neck, NY 11024............2,205 Thus, more than 8 out of every 10 places with a "Great Neck, NY" mailing address are NOT in the Village of Great Neck. Quickly eyeballing the map overlay of the "11020 through 11024" postal ZIP codes versus village and hamlet borders, the following 13 communities (9 villages and 4 hamlets) seem to be at least partially within the borders of the "Great Neck, NY" postal zone and hence places in these communities can have a "Great Neck, NY" mailing address (if the community is a village, its year of incorporation is shown inside the parenthesis): .......................................................acres Village of Great Neck (1921).................866 Village of Great Neck Estates (1911).....489 Hamlet of Great Neck Gardens................* Village of Great Neck Plaza (1930)........199 Hamlet of Harbor Hills.............................* Village of Kensington (1921)..................156 Village of Kings Point (1924)...............2,125 Village of Lake Success (1927)...........1,205 Village of Russell Gardens (1931)..........109 Village of Saddle Rock (1911)................169 Hamlet of Saddle Rock Estates...............* Village of Thomaston (1931)..................270 Hamlet of University Gardens...................* * The Hamlets of Great Neck Gardens, Harbor Hills, Saddle Rock Estates and University Gardens total 596 acres. 3. Hello All I found my gr. Uncle in the 1920 Census: Matthew O'Neill living on 318 cleveland St, Smithville So. Nassau County. His brother in law Otto Senn was the head of household at the time. Also living there was Matthew's wife Minnie, who was Ottos sister. And Elizabeth Ottos mother and it listed a "Howard age 10" would that be Matthew and Minnies son or Otto's son? I found this on roll 1625-1127; Pg 16B, Image 274. Also how do I track Matthew and Minnie now? He once owned O'Neill Ford in Hempstead LI. I do not know when they died etc. Thankyou Marie K. The soundex card read that he was naturalized in Oct 21, 1891, gave a bundle # of 11 and copy of record # as 53. This all happened at The County Court , Queens Co. NY. Does anyone have an idea of where to write for a record or do I have to go in person somewhere? I would appreciate any help. Cathy

The 2nd is the Rootsweb Boards, sometimes you see on the lists, cryptic messages gatewayed to the list, these are from the boards...Not all lists have associated boards (QR), but most do, these are places where the entire genealogy community may review your questions/answers, a wider audience than the lists, (yes, I do know about the archives)...Sooo, if you'd to make my job more difficult (I admin 14 boards), drop by from www.rootsweb.com and click the Message Boards tab... Also, if you would like to try Admining an existing board, or start a new one, I'll be glad to help you... Regards, UncleFred http://home.att.net/~unclefred www.rootsweb.com/~nyessex

I am sorry,if you went to the trouble to look for information in the Methodist Church records. It is my understanding this cemetary was for early residents of Lawrence, including the Crafts. Earlier than the time frame I mentioned in my posting. I suggest that you re-read my posting. I am doing research on a Swedish female connection and names are a fleeting commodity, but I feel that descendents of Doris Craft would recognize the names. The parents are buried in Hewlett.
