However, the Hamlet of Garden City Park appears to be partly in the Hillside Library District and partly in the Shelter Rock Library District. So, you might have to check with both libraries. HILLSIDE PUBLIC LIBRARY 1950 Hillside Avenue New Hyde Park, NY 11040 Tel: 516/488-3316 eMail: [email protected] http://www.nassaulibrary.org/hillside/index.htm SHELTER ROCK PUBLIC LIBRARY 165 Searingtown Road Albertson, NY 11507 Tel: 516/248-7363 eMail: [email protected] http://www.nassaulibrary.org/shelter/index.html Garden City Park is one of those many communities on Long Island where none of the places in Garden City Park have a "Garden City Park, NY" mailing address. The pertinent geography: Garden City Park is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the southwestern section of the Town of North Hempstead. There are 30 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 17 hamlets all or partly in the Town of North Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Garden City Park in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Herricks; on the east by the Village of Mineola; on the south by the Village of Garden City, Town of Hempstead (the North Hempstead/Hempstead Town line); and, on the west by the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Garden City Park has a different border than does the postal zone that services its area. In this case, there is no "Garden City Park, NY" postal zone. ................................................acres ....Hamlet of Garden City Park.....755 ....Garden City Park, NY ?????...none All places within the Hamlet of Garden City Park are in the "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" postal zone. For those who have their copy of the 2001 LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Garden City Park in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 8 (map) and 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

The earlier indexes on Ancestry do not show ages, so it is hard to find yours. I have these though right now. I will look further in my notes to see if I have any more. Stephen Smith I found in the 1850 Hempstead P. 104. Mary was not living with them and they was no listing for Sylvester even though you show a 1849 birthdate. Willet Mott Smith (1853 dob) I found when looking for George Wilbur. They are living in the same household (or apartment building) with another person William Harsst or Hurst 46 and his wife Clara 33. Willet M. 66 head no occup Emma E. 58 wife George W. 24 head/ ? with an ice company wife's name illegible 20 They were found in Ed #28 1920 town of Hempstead P.38, looks like Edmund St. I don't know if this is a connection, but in 1850, found a Willett Mott age 33 sea captain P. 195 Hempstead. Well, that's it for now. Let me know if you need someone specifically and what year. Hope this helps some.
