    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/526.2 Message Board Post: Wills, administrations, guardianships, etc. are filed with the Nassau County Surrogate's Court at the county seat in Mineola for the period 1899 to date. Pre-1899 files are located in the Queens County Surrogate's Court in Jamaica. Property records are located in the Nassau County Clerk's Office in Mineola. The Clerk has the Queens County real property records on microfilm for periods prior to 1899, with the originals kept by the Queens County Office of the City Register (located in Jamaica, Queens); Long Island Studies Institute at Hofstra University also has the pre-1899 microfilm. As Walter suggested, contact the village clerk of Freeport - vital records may be on file there or may be kept by the Clerk of the Town of Hempstead.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/527.2 Message Board Post: If the wills or administrations were entered into probate prior to Jan. 1, 1899, the files will be in the Surrogate's Court in Jamaica, Queens County. Deeds, mortgages, etc. filed prior to 1899 with the County Clerk are located in the Queens Office of the City Register in Jamaica, Queens. The Long Island Studies Institute at Hofstra University in Hempstead (now Nassau County) has some Queens County property records on microfilm. It's best that you go to the Register's Office yourself, or hire a researcher to go for you. You cannot do anything over the phone or by mail with this office. You can work by mail with the Surrogate, but it is very expensive for the staff to do lookups and do copying for you. If you visit the records room in person, you can go thru the indexes yourself, and when files are pulled, you can make copies yourself.

    2. I'm repeating my eMail as I mistyped Nassau County, where I should have typed Suffolk County: If it was in Brentwood, then it would be in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County (not Nassau County as erroneously transmitted in my earlier reply). On 3/12/03 (4:08:36 PM MST), Marie Kravette ([email protected]) asked, "Does anyone know where/about "Mason General Hospital." I think it was in Brentwood LI. My Mom said that my father was sent there about 1945 he was in WW2 fighting overseas 4yrs. and she said he came home Shell shocked, whatever that means. I would like to know more about this please and if there is an ed for it to try to find him in it or directories of some sort." If it was in Brentwood, then it would be in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County (not Nassau County as erroneously transmitted in my earlier reply). The pertinent geography: Brentwood is a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the northwestern section of the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, along the border with the Towns of Smithtown, Huntington and Babylon. There are 4 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 23 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Islip. There are no cities and 10 towns in Suffolk County. There are 2 Indian reservations in Suffolk County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Brentwood in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by Hamlets of Commack and Hauppauge in the Town of Smithtown (the Islip/Smithtown town line); on the east by the Hamlets of Central Islip and Islip; on the south by the Hamlets of Islip, North Bay Shore and Baywood; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Deer Park in the Town of Babylon (the Islip/Babylon town line) and the Hamlet of Dix Hills in the Town of Huntington (the Islip/Huntington town line). And, as occurs in every one of Suffolk County's 157 communities (0 cities, 31 villages and 126 hamlets), the Hamlet of Brentwood has a different border than does the "Brentwood, NY" postal zone. Hence, places, such as part of the Hamlet of Dix Hills in the Town of Huntington, can have a "Brentwood, NY" mailing address and not be in Brentwood and places in Brentwood may have other than a "Brentwood, NY" mailing address. For those who have their copy of the 2002 or earlier editions of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Brentwood in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County on pages 14 & 20 (map) and 21 (population estimate). WHERE AM I MOST LIKELY TO FIND DEEDS FOR OYSTER BAY AND WILLS? THANKS. THE DEED WOULD BE BEFORE 1850 AND THE WILL WOULD BE AFTER 1850, IF THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE." The office of the Town Clerk for the Town of Oyster Bay might be of some help in telling you where these records might be: Office of the Town Clerk Town of Oyster Bay 54 Audrey Avenue Oyster Bay, NY 11771 Tel: 516/624-6332 http://www.oysterbaytown.com/ However, you may have to search in Queens County. Circa 1850, the Town of Oyster Bay (including all the villages and hamlets within its borders) was then part of Queens County. Also, on June 15, 1886, the Lloyd's Neck peninsula, otherwise called Horse's Head peninsula, in the extreme northeast part of the then Hamlet of Oyster Bay, Town of Oyster Bay, Queens County was transferred by an Act of the NYS Legislature to the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County. On January 1, 1899, the Town of Oyster Bay (including all the villages and hamlets within its borders), along with the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead (excluding the Rockaway peninsula) seceded and became independent of Queens County and formed Nassau County.

Would it be the Town Hall in Freeport, or would they be found in Mineola, which handles (I think), Nassau's records? If I'm going to go in person, I want to go to the right place. Although they are close enough that I could go to both. Perhaps the records are split between the two? Thank you for any help." Depending on the record, the record would be kept by either the Village of Freeport, the Town of Hempstead or the County of Nassau as Freeport is a village (municipal corporation) in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County.
