Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lRB.2ACE/816 Message Board Post: I have little information about Wm. We have found a Bible with the inscription "To William Stoothoff from your Sabbath School teacher Mary E. Smith. Dec. 25, 1872 Rockville Center" We have been to RC and found limited information (However, we had only a few hours.) Our guess is that the church was likely St. Mark's Methodist Church, but they told us that there was a fire about 1930 and most records were lost. I have found a Wm in the 1870 census in the family of Jacob R. Stoothoff, mother Phebe, sister Arabella. But since I have no other information I can't link my William to this family. Can anyone help? Thanks, Carolyn

    1. Were there "plantations" in Queens Co. circa. 1800?
    2. On 12/13/2004 (3:02:42 PM MST), in a posting to the Queens County Ancestry Board that was 'gatewayed' to NYQUEENS-L@rootsweb.com, Janet Wood (gigagirl@comcast.net) asked, "In a will I am researching, Joseph Wood refers to his property as his "plantation". Was this word commonly used to refer to ones farmland? Would the fact that Joseph uses this word give any clues as to his status, origin, etc.? I just find it an odd choice of words and have not come across this term before in my research of Queens Co. families. He wrote his will in 1796. He lived in Oyster Bay Township." There most likely were plantations in all part so of Long Island, which at that time included Kings, Queens and Suffolk Counties. Since January 1, 1899, the Town (not township) of Oyster Bay has been in Nassau County as on January 1, 1899, the eastern three-quarters -- the Towns of North Hempstead, Hempstead and Oyster Bay -- of Queens County seceded and formed Nassau County. For questions such as yours, you may want to check with Long Island Studies Institute: Long Island Studies Institute West Campus Library Hofstra University 619 Fulton Avenue Hempstead, NY 11549-4575 Tel: 516/463-6411 Fax 516/463-6441 eMail: lisi@hofstra.edu http://www.hofstra.edu/Libraries/LISI/index_LISI.cfm You may also want to contact the Oyster Bay Historical Society and the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library: The Oyster Bay Historical Society P.O. Box 297 20 Summit Street Oyster Bay, NY 11771-0297 Tel: 516/922-5032 Fax: 516/922-6892 eMail: OBHistory@aol.com http://members.aol.com/OBHistory/ Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library 89 East Main Street Oyster Bay 11771 Tel: 516/922-1212 Fax: 516/922-6453 eMail: ??????? http://www.nassaulibrary.org/oysterbay/index.html Oyster Bay is one of those communities on Long Island where the majority of the places with an Oyster Bay mailing address are not in Oyster Bay, and it is important to know that there are 3 "Oyster Bays" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage): 1. There is the Hamlet of Oyster Bay = 763 acres 2. There is the Oyster Bay, NY 11771 postal zone = 7,002 acres 3. There is the Town of Oyster Bay = 70,908 acres The pertinent geography: Oyster Bay is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northern most part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County. There are 18 villages (municipal corporations) and 18 hamlets all or partly in the Town of Oyster Bay. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Oyster Bay Harbor, on the east by the Village of Oyster Bay Cove, on the south by the Hamlet of East Norwich and on the west by the Village of Upper Brookville and the Village of Mill Neck. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Hamlet of Oyster Bay has a different border than does the "Oyster Bay, NY 11771" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an Oyster Bay mailing address and not be in Oyster Bay). ............................................acres ....Hamlet of Oyster Bay............763 ....Oyster Bay, NY 11771........7,002 ....Town of Oyster Bay..........70,908 Thus, you can readily see that 9 of every 10 places with an "Oyster Bay" mailing address are NOT in the Hamlet of Oyster Bay. [These places may be in the Village of Centre Island (incorporated in 1926), the Village of Cove Neck (incorporated in 1927), the Village of Oyster Bay Cove (incorporated in 1931), the Village of Laurel Hollow (incorporated in 1926), the Hamlet of East Norwich, the Village of Muttontown (incorporated in 1931), the Village of Upper Brookville (incorporated in 1932) and the Village of Mill Neck (incorporated in 1924).] For those who have their copy of the 2003 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Hamlet of Oyster Bay in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County on pages 5 & 11 (map) and 12 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Happy Chanukah, Walter Greenspan The 8-day rabbinic Festival of Chanukah begins Tuesday night, December 7. Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

On 12/12/04 (12:48:42 PM MST) in a posting to both NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com and NY-LONGISLAND-L@rootsweb.com, Suzanne Ng (suzanne@whatexit.com) wrote, "Possibly Nassau County has a set up, and offers their union catalog on-line? I searched for about 3 minutes and came up with this: http://www.nassaulibrary.org/ There are 3 searchable catalogs: ALIScat ( http://www.alisweb.org/ ) A catalog of the books and audiovisual materials owned by 51 of the 54 member libraries of the Nassau Library System which may be borrowed by cardholders of all NLS member libraries. Elmont Public Library Catalog (http://www.elmontlibrary.org/) The books and audiovisual materials owned by this library are not included in ALISweb but they may be borrowed by the cardholders of all NLS member libraries. Great Neck Public Library Catalog ( http://204.168.120.1/ ) The books and audiovisual materials owned by this library are not included in ALISweb but they may be borrowed by the cardholders of all NLS member libraries. Hope you find what you need in one of these catalogs. Good post, and thank you Suzanne Ng. Happy Chanukah, Walter Greenspan The 8-day rabbinic Festival of Chanukah begins Tuesday night, December 7.

    2. On 12/11/04 (11:49:15 PM MST), in a posting to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Gloria M. Bauer (bauerg@svpal.org) asked, "Does Nassau County have an on-line form to order copies of death certificates? If so please give me the site and the cost." Death certificates are issued by the 2 cities, 3 towns and some, but not all, of the 64 villages within the 3 towns in Nassau County and depends on where the death occurred, not where the person was residing immediately prior to the death. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Happy Chanukah, Walter Greenspan The 8-day rabbinic Festival of Chanukah begins Tuesday night, December 7.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lRB.2ACE/815.1 Message Board Post: On 12/11/04 (6:59:04 PM MST), in a posting to the Nassau County Ancestry Baord that was 'gatewayed' to NYNASSAU-L@rootsweb.com, Lori Gallagher (MegRysmom@aol.com) asked, "I am researching my husband's family history. We are looking for information on the Gallagher Sand and Gravel Company that was located in Hempstead Harbor, NY. I have a book called "Discovering Sands Point" which has reference to my husband's ancestors. We are just looking for any additional information anyone might have on the company, and more importantly, the people who ran the company (John Gallagher and Cornelius Gallagher). There is also mention of a John Murray as being a part of the company at one point. John Gallagher and John Murray appear to have leased land on June 1, 1870 for the purposes of sand mining. It also appears that the mining was finished in 1875 (which doesn't really make sense with my other information...). " For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Port Washington Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Port Washington Public Library One Library Drive Port Washington, NY 11050 Tel: 516/883-4400 Fax: 516/944-6855 eMail: reference@pwpl.org http://www.pwpl.org/ Sands Point is one of those communities on Long Island where the none of the places in Sands Point have a "Sands Point, NY" mailing address. The pertinent geography: Sands Point is a village (incorporated in 1932) in the northeast part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the northwest. There are 30 villages and 18 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of North Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Sands Point in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the west, north, and east by Long Island Sound; and on the south by the Hamlet of Port Washington, the Village of Port Washington North, the Village of Manorhaven and Hempstead Harbor. And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Sands has a different border than does the "Sands Point, NY" postal zone: in this case there is no "Sands Point, NY" postal zone. ..................................................acres .......Village of Sands Point...........2,743 .......Sands Point, NY....................??? All of the Village of Sands Point is in the "Port Washington, NY" postal zone and hence all places in the Village of Sands Point have a "Port Washington, NY" mailing address. (There are 6 communities -- 5 villages and 1 hamlet -- that are all or partly within the "Port Washington, NY" postal zone, and more than 3 out of every 5 places with a "Port Washington, NY" mailing address are NOT in the Hamlet of Port Washington.) For those who have their copy of the 2003 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Sands Point (incorporated in 1932) in the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5 & 6 (map) and 7 (population estimate).

    3. The Long Island Collection (Room?) at the Queensboro Public Library in Jamaica has microfilm copies of some directories for some Long Island communities for some years (some deal, huh?). They have a website and they (used to) answer emails. I don't think they'll do a lookup for you but they can probably tell you what they have. It's been years since I've been there; I used the directories at the library. Perhaps another more knowledgeable lister can give you better information. Nancy Coleman?
