To SmittyMom, 6 years ago I started looking for my great grandfather " John Smith" from New York is all I had. My father remembered that the family had been in Amsterdam, NY. He died in his late 80's with no other family members to take care of him, I started calling hospitals. In 1958 when he died, there were no old folks homes and he had been placed in the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center in Utica, NY. They required a letter that I was his closest living relative and they sent me all the papers on him including a photo and his parents names and a list of al the people who visited him. I have since gotten the family from Camden, NY were he was born to Ireland with this info. I hope this may help you.
