A recent death certificate shows the place of birth on an ancestor, George Mackey, as being in "Mohawk River". I do not know exactly where to start as I imagine that this river runs through many counties. The year of birth would have been about 1820. This George Mackey married Ann Eliza Banta, of Ballston Spa, Saratoga County on May 9, 1843. Since Saratoga and Herkimer Counties are near each other, I am starting here. But I also see that the river flows in Montgomery County. Any suggestions as to searching for this Mackey family of Mohawk River, ca 1820 would be appreciated. The Mackeys may have been recent Irish immigrants of the potato famine era. I have traced George and Ann Eliza Mackey to Marquette and Green Lake Counties, WI, where George died in 1873. Ann Eliza died in Bole Heights, Los Angeles, CA in 1915. Thanks, Ron Yielding Palm Springs, CA
A couple of thoughts on Mackey and Mohawk River. 1. NYS took censuses in years ending with 5. Those after 1855 list every person in a household and tell the county of birth, if in NYS, otherwise the state or country of birth. 2. US and NYS census records may show more generations in a household; if you find George Mackey, you may find him living in his parents' household, or they with him, even after his marriage. I searched for the village of Mohawk River (if it existed as a community) using three online gazetteers. I did not find it. One was a gazetteer of current NY places, one was for places in 1890, and the third was for current places that had a different name in the past. If it existed as a community, it must have been along the Mohawk River, of course. Saratoga and Albany counties only have about 13 miles of shoreline on the river. Next to the west is Schenectady Co. which is small and has about 26 miles of shoreline. Next, is Montgomery Co. which has about 48 miles of shoreline. I measure all of these on my map. Following that is Herkimer Co. which has the city of Mohawk. That sounds promising, but if it was the place, then the name Mohawk River should have showed up in the third gazetteer above. I'm sorry that none of this is valuable information in helping you to make a decision as to where to begin the search. It is my impression, possibly from a will or deed that I read online, that it was in Montgomery Co. However, it is just a fuzzy impression.
